Job Summary
This role is responsible for leading the on-site delivery of the project’s environmental strategy and ensuring rigorous compliance in complex operational areas. Reporting to the Environmental Manager, the Senior Environmental Advisor will drive the implementation of environmental management activities, ensuring full compliance with legal requirements and corporate standards, including Dragados's ISO 14001 and ISO 50001 certified systems. This role requires active on-site leadership to embed a strong culture of environmental responsibility, providing mentorship to junior team members and technical guidance to the wider project delivery team.
Key Responsibilities
* Mentor and develop Environmental Advisors, providing technical guidance and support to improve team knowledge and performance.
* Lead the identification and management of complex or high-risk environmental activities, ensuring robust mitigation strategies are implemented on site.
* Advise the project delivery team (including sub-contractors) regarding compliance with the requirements of the Construction Environmental Management Plan (CEMP) and associated documents.
* Deliver appropriate risk management communications, including toolbox talks, briefings, and training, to ensure engagement across the project.
* Ensure all known environmental risks are fully understood, and appropriate mitigation is incorporated into on-site activities.
* Conduct regular site inspections and compliance assurance checks, focusing on high-risk activities to ensure consents and client requirements are consistently met.
* Promote a proactive environmental culture across the project, engaging with the workforce and supply chain to encourage best practices and a collaborative approach.
* Act as the primary point of contact for site-based regulatory visits in the absence of the Environmental Manager, fostering positive working relationships with stakeholders.
* Produce clear and accurate environmental data for the Environmental Manager to support performance reporting and risk management at a strategic level.
* Manage environmental documentation, including permits, consents, waste records, and audit findings, ensuring they are consistently maintained and compliant.
* Collaborate with technical specialists to identify and implement practical, cost-effective mitigation strategies for environmental risks.
* Lead ‘lessons learned’ reviews following environmental activities and incidents to drive continuous improvement in processes and performance.
Technical Skills And Competencies
* Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to convey complex environmental information clearly and concisely to diverse audiences.
* An advanced practical understanding of UK environmental legislation, including the Environment Act 2021 and the Environmental Protection Act 1990.
* Strong commercial awareness, with the ability to balance environmental objectives with project budget and programme constraints.
* Understanding of NEC contracts is desirable.
* Excellent organisational, task management, and team engagement skills.
* Proven experience in implementing and maintaining ISO 14001 and ISO 50001 certified management systems on construction sites.
Qualifications, Certifications And Experience
* Educated to degree level (BSc or equivalent) in a relevant discipline, such as Environmental Science, Environmental Management, or a related Engineering field.
* Associate Membership of an appropriate professional body (e.g., ISEP) working towards Full membership
* A valid CSCS Card.
* A minimum of 5 years’ experience, with at least 3 years dedicated to construction environmental management.
* A strong track record of supporting projects with an excellent safety, quality, and sustainability record.
* Experience interfacing with other contractors, regulators (e.g. Environment Agency), and major infrastructure clients (e.g., Network Rail, National Highways, TfL).
