The Opportunity
The College is seeking to appoint a dynamic, enthusiastic, and hardworking graduate to join the History Department and train to become a teacher. The successful applicant will be given a fixed-term contract over the training period and will divide their time between teaching and learning support duties.
The College has a well-developed mentoring system and comprehensive professional development opportunities, through which, trainees will be fully supported towards a PGCE in Post Compulsory Education (paid for by the College).
The Qualification
The post holder will undertake a PGCE in Post Compulsory Education over the duration of the fixed-term contract. They will work at the College during the working day and complete the lectures and seminars for the qualification on Tuesday nights from 5.30pm until 8.30pm each week. These sessions will take place on the College campus.
The Post
As a trainee, your typical week will comprise of teaching, usually between 4 and 17 periods per week (21 for a full-time teacher), in addition to planning, preparation and marking time. The remainder of your time will be spent as a Learning Facilitator (Teaching Assistant) either supporting in class or working with individual students.
In addition to the PGCE sessions, you will be expected to attend various evening events throughout the year including Open Evenings and Student Review Meetings.
The post is a fixed-term, full-time appointment and is effective from 26 August 2025 to 2 July 2027. It is important to note that the College is unable to guarantee you any employment once your training is complete.
Applicants must have a relevant degree in Sport or Public Services or a related subject and must not already hold a teaching qualification. The successful applicant will need to demonstrate a clear commitment to a career in teaching and preferably have experience of working with young adults.
The Department
The Department is housed in the Visual Arts Building in modern, fully equipped classrooms. The team consists of five other teachers who work in a collaborative style, contributing to central teaching resources. Students regularly progress onto university courses for History, Classics, Politics, Journalism, Archaeology, Law and Teaching.

Salary
Trainees are paid from £20,975 to £23,764 per annum, depending on the balance of duties between teaching and learning support. Please note that the fees for the PGCE course will be paid for by the College.
