We are looking for a Materials Scientist/FA Engineer to head a small group providing a Technical Service to the Company, across the full Lifecycle of Products focused chiefly on Materials Science and Defect Investigation, across Engineering disciplines. This is an exciting and challenging opportunity at a time of significant growth for the Company.
1. Provide a value added Defect Investigation Service to the Company in a timely manner, taking into account customer requirements.
2. The day-to-day running of a technical service group including lab facilities. Included in this are responsibilities for H&S, RPS, Capital, and Maintenance.
3. Supervision of others within the group, supporting their development in the field of Defect Investigation and Materials Science.
4. Providing Materials Science support to the engineering community.
5. Outsourcing investigative work, as dictated by workload and technical limitations, to external suppliers where appropriate.
6. Prioritising work, in line with business needs to ensure best value of resources.
7. Working across engineering disciplines providing support in mechanical, electronic and optical activities.
8. Mentor, coach and teach other engineers and scientists.
9. Advance the expertise in the field of Materials Science especially in the field of adhesives and surface preparation.
10. Lead the technical direction and provide the oversight needed for the team to achieve novel approaches to Defect Investigation.
11. A degree in a relevant science or engineering discipline or have equivalent work experience.
12. Be able to self-manage, self-motivate and look to continuously develop.
13. Have the ability to develop lab. skills such as in micro-section preparation, optical and electron microscopy
14. Be able to communicate effectively across different disciplines both verbally and in written form.
15. Be willing to work on your own or as part of a team to resolve technical issues.
16. Have experience in Defect Investigation and have a methodical and thorough approach to this discipline.
17. Be able to advise on Materials Science issues to the wider Leonardo community.
18. Well rounded experience in all phases of the Product Life Cycle across several projects and preferably in a number of engineering domains
19. Experience of customer/ supplier relations and working within multi-discipline project teams.
20. Experience with techniques, such as;Scanning Electron Microscopy with Energy Dispersive X-ray AnalysisOptical MicroscopyMicro-section preparation Vacuum processes e.g. for determining outgassing properties of materialsX-ray imaging and other NDT methods such as PFD.
