If you're a defendant PI solicitor with public liability experience and you've ever wondered what that work looks like in-house, at serious scale, this is worth reading.
West Midlands Police is the second largest police force in the country. Its Joint Legal Services team, shared with Staffordshire Police, is growing, and it needs a Senior Lawyer to lead its civil litigation function.
The role
This is a split between management and casework. You'll manage a team of three lawyers and one paralegal while carrying your own caseload of public liability claims: unlawful arrest, false imprisonment, misfeasance, malicious prosecution, Human Rights Act claims and data protection matters.
The work is complex, fast-moving and rarely straightforward. Multi-track cases are the norm, and the caseload reflects the breadth of activity that comes with policing one of the UK's largest and most diverse regions.
What you'll get
* Management responsibility with the support of a Principal Solicitor
* A complex, varied caseload with real substance
* Strong prospects for progression in an actively growing department
* Opportunities to get involved in gold group advisory work and more
* 28 days annual leave, rising with service
* Option to buy additional leave
* Local Government Pension Scheme with flexible contribution options
* Hybrid working with two days per week in the office
* Police Mutual, covering financial services, healthcare and more
* Corporate travel, car parking and Cycle to Work schemes
* Enhanced maternity, paternity and adoption leave
* Childcare vouchers saving up to £900 per year
* Employee Assistance Programme (VIVUP)
* Counselling and referral services for you and your family
* Discounts on gym memberships, travel and more
What we're looking for
* Qualified solicitor or barrister
* Solid defendant public liability experience
* Some experience of supervising others
* Feel ready to step into a senior role.
The bigger picture
The direction of travel for UK policing is consolidation towards fewer, larger forces. West Midlands Police is well positioned in that landscape and the legal team will only grow with it. If you're prepared to commit to the role and the organisation, there will be ample opportunity for ongoing career development and progression.
