Job Overview Water is the heart of all we do, drinking, washing, recreation, industry and health. Our environment and economy depend on this precious resource. Clean water is essential and as water becomes an increasingly important resource we need to ensure that it can provide the functions we require of it. We have an exciting opportunity for you to play your part in improving bathing waters in the beautiful and diverse environments of the Solent and South Downs. We need your knowledge and experience to help manage the quality of our bathing waters to ensure they are fit for swimming. If you are passionate about the environment, see the risks, understand what needs to be done and can work closely with those who hold the key to change, you can ensure our water environment functions for nature and society.

Responsibilities

Work closely with national policy and process, area delivery and key customers on aspects of strategic planning, incident management and local actions on the ground.

Plan responses to current pressures and future demands from water company investment programmes to land management from moors to coasts.

Collaborate with dispersed teams, operational teams, national colleagues and water companies, collating, analysing and sharing data to produce environmental evidence that informs and drives area priorities.

Qualifications & Competencies Competency 1: Scientific Knowledge Applies scientific knowledge (various disciplines, depending on team role) to provide sound, science‑based evidence to internal and external customers.

Question: In this role you will be dealing with complex scientific issues and concepts relating to water quality and its effect on the environment. Tell us how you can use your scientific knowledge to fulfil the duties of this role.

Competency 2: Achieves Results Sets and delivers high work standards, demonstrates the drive to meet targets. Prioritises and organises tasks and resources to ensure timely achievement of results.

Question: In this role you will support colleagues to provide evidence to other areas of the business to help improve water quality in the Solent and South Downs area. Describe a time when you delivered a piece of work, setting high standards; meeting targets and prioritising and organising tasks to ensure timely and effective achievement of results.

Competency 3: Manages Self Has full awareness of own strengths, weaknesses, impact and approach. Effectively organises self and takes personal responsibility for own role in the Environment Agency.

Question: In this role you will support team members on a variety of topics and tasks but will have a fair degree of autonomy. Please describe how you manage yourself to meet multiple deadlines.

Experience / Skills Required

Good knowledge and/or experience of water quality planning and ecology.

Ability or experience with technical conversations with internal and external partners.

Political awareness to deliver the right service when dealing with customers and stakeholders.

Ability to work collaboratively with other teams.

Ability to articulate solutions to problems in a simple, engaging way.

Good judgement, problem solving and decision making skills.

Good planning skills, with the ability to handle multiple priorities and deliver to tight timescales.

Water quality modelling experience or aptitude to learn.

GIS mapping skills or aptitude to learn.
