Job overview

The post is based in the Joint Research and Development Office for Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) and the UCL - Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health (GOS-ICH). The Joint R&D Office is responsible for all R&D governance, administration and research management, holding comprehensive data on all clinical and non-clinical research taking place across both organisations. The R&D Office provides a number of services including the provision of advice and support on funders and funding streams for applicants, research governance, ethical approval, data protection, costing of grant applications, advising on commercially sponsored research, and the management of intellectual property.

The Senior Research Projects Manager (SRPM) manages a small team and is supported by the Clinical Research Administrator. The Project Manager, Research Hospital works alongside the Programme Coordinator as part of R&I’s project management office, to help deliver a broad range of projects across the directorate.

The scope of the role is to support research grant development for research studies across GOSH and GOS-ICH, and projects that form part of the Intelligent Research Hospital Initiative. The post holder will deliver targeted communication of open funding calls and funding opportunities to a wide audience across both GOSH and GOS-ICH, and assist the Clinical Research Facilitator in managing the registration of every research project at both institutions.. They will also support the R&I project management office with tasks related to the ongoing R&I process optimisation project, administration of governance committees and with the collection and reporting of metrics.


Main duties of the job

Assist the Grants Advice, and Project Registration teams to provide an excellent service to Research Staff at GOSH and UCL-GOSICH, advising on funding opportunities, managing the CRAC committee and assisting with project registration. Assist the Project Management Team to deliver recommendations identified in the ongoing R&I Process Optimisation Project.

Main duties and responsibilities

Grants Advice Service



Assist the Senior Research Projects Manager to provide a comprehensive Grants Advice service for researchers at both GOSH and GOS-ICH.

· Develop and maintain up to date knowledge of funding opportunities relevant to GOSH and GOS-ICH research-active and research-interested staff.

· Assist the SRPM in providing expert and bespoke advice regarding potential funding opportunities, and local pre-submission requirements and approval processes

· Assist in the development of systems to identify and target Trust staff interested in research (but not research active) to develop project ideas to operational or fundable status and assist ICH basic science researchers with translation of research and access to the patient population at GOSH where applicable.

· Publicise the service to research staff in both institutions by email, and attendance at meetings and workshops.

· Lead on the production and circulation of the fortnightly research funding opportunities bulletin.

· Liaise with GOSHCC to publicise their funding calls to local researchers.





Management of Internal “Own Account” Research Projects



Assist the SRPM with the operations of the Clinical Research Adoptions Committee (CRAC).

·Assist with the Triage process for determining whether GOSH will support a particular internal unfunded or “own account” research activity. Lead on the feedback to applicants.

·Assist with the full committee process for internal unfunded or “own account” research projects, and ensure that potential applicants are clearly briefed on the requirements and scope of the committee activity.

·Oversee the CRAC shared email inbox, and ensure enquiries are dealt with in a timely manner, and ensure that applications are appropriately registered, sent for peer review where necessary and that committee papers are prepared within committee deadlines.

·Prepare minutes of the committee proceedings, and prepare the decision letter templates for applicants within committee deadlines.





Research Administration



·Work closely with the Clinical Research Administrator to assist with the efficient processing of new research applications through the joint R&D office and ensure that research grant applications are processed and registered in a timely manner, and that all necessary approvals are obtained in time for applicant grant submission deadlines to be met.

·Monitor the R&D Registration email inbox and undertake application registration and processing at times when the Clinical Research Administrator requires assistance, or is absent.

·Work closely with the Project Manager, Research Hospital to help with the processing of applications to GOSH Sample Bank Tissue Access Committee (HTAC/TAC); including accurate recording in the application tracker, linking in with the Governance team as required, seeking peer review if necessary and keeping Committee members updated on the progress of applications.

·Support the Project Manager and Programme Coordinator with the logistics, actions and administration of governance committees as required.

·Work with the Project Manager, Programme Coordinator and other stakeholders to help deliver the recommendations that were identified in our going R&I Process Optimisation project. Support communication with workstream leads, help to monitor progress against recommendations and track and report achievements and success.

·Organise, contribute to, and participate in research communications events within R&I and across both institutions where appropriate.





Reporting and Data Gathering



·Gather information and prepare metrics detailing application submission and success rates for GOSH Divisions and GOS-ICH research Programmes using the R&D Research Management systems and other mechanisms.

·Work with the Clinical Research Administrator to monitor the success of submitted funding applications, and update the R&D Office management systems accordingly.

·Work with the Programme Coordinator to gather information and prepare metrics for Trust wide reporting of R&I activity.





Research Communication



· Utilise the Research Connect funding database to produce a fortnightly Research Funding Opportunities Bulletin for distribution to researchers across both organisations (GOSH and UCL-GOS ICH).

· Assist GOSHCC as necessary with fundraising activities to support research projects funded by GOSHCC and other external funders.

· Assemble materials required for publicising the work of GOSHCC commissioned research projects and other projects to service users, funding donors and other stakeholders, including promotional materials and flyers.

· Assist with the communication of Intelligent Research Hospital activity both internally within R&I and externally to the wider Trust, staff, patients and families.
