3 months contract with a Local Authority
Job Summary:
• An opportunity has arisen for a part-time Enforcement Officer (Environmental Health) to join the Commercial Services Team on a short-term contract.
• The primary responsibility will be to carry out programmed food hygiene inspections in accordance with current legislation and Food Standards Agency (FSA) requirements.
• The role offers flexibility to fit around other commitments and provides the chance to make a direct contribution to public health protection.
Key Duties/Accountabilities (Sample):
• Conduct 80–100 programmed food hygiene inspections within the contract period (primarily Category D, with some Category B and C premises).
• Assess compliance with food hygiene and safety legislation during inspections.
• Complete inspection reports and risk ratings in accordance with the Food Law Code of Practice.
• Produce formal letters and detailed reports where required, including enforcement advice and necessary follow-up actions.
• Accurately record findings and maintain records in line with regulatory and service requirements.
• Liaise with food business operators and provide professional advice on legal compliance and best practice.
• Where necessary, escalate enforcement issues or serious non-compliance to the relevant manager.
Skills/Experience:
• Evidence of competency to undertake official food controls (Regulatory Food Safety Inspections).
• Up-to-date CPD (minimum of 20 hours annually, with at least 10 hours related to food hygiene inspections).
• Experience conducting food hygiene inspections and applying food law.
• Strong report writing and documentation skills.
• Ability to work independently and manage workload efficiently.
• Good communication skills, both written and verbal.
• Completed Competency Assessment (per FSA requirements).
• Previous experience within local authority commercial environmental health teams.
• Familiarity with risk rating systems and local enforcement procedures.
Additional Information:
• Relevant qualification such as: Higher or Advanced Certificate in Food Premises Inspection (Environmental Health Registration Board0, BSc/MSc in Environmental Health or equivalent.
• Hours: Part-time – 22.5 hours per week.
