Job Summary

As a General Practitioner (GP) employed through the Additional Roles Reimbursement Scheme (ARRS) within a Primary Care Network (PCN), you will provide high‑quality, patient‑centred care while working as part of a multidisciplinary team. You will manage a range of acute and chronic conditions, participate in health promotion and contribute to team‑based care plans, with appropriate supervision.


Main Duties

* In person and telephone consultations
* Visiting patients at home or in nursing homes
* Checking and signing repeat prescriptions
* Handling queries, paperwork, correspondence and clinical administration
* Working closely with PCN and practice teams


Job Responsibilities

* Make professional, autonomous decisions about presenting problems, whether self‑referral or referral from other health‑care workers.
* Screen patients for disease risk factors and early signs of illness.
* Provide full clinical management in surgery, including investigations, reviewing results and referrals to secondary care or other providers.
* Develop care and treatment plans in consultation with patients and in line with current practice disease‑management protocols and NICE guidance.
* Ensure appropriate follow‑up of patients.
* Record clear, contemporaneous computerised consultation notes to agreed standards.
* Participate in clinical audits, learning event analyses and practice meetings.
* Compile and issue computer‑generated acute and repeat prescriptions, avoiding hand‑written prescriptions.
* Prescribe generically whenever appropriate, in accordance with the practice prescribing formulary, NICE guidance and Good Prescribing Practice (British National Formulary).
* Support other members of the primary health‑care team.
* Lead the practice in achieving agreed key performance indicator targets.
* Manage personal time and workload efficiently and meet performance benchmarks for the PCN.
* Use significant event analysis to alert staff to potential risks.
* Engage in all relevant training and development and keep up to date with guidelines.
* Ensure confidentiality and security of all information, maintaining GDPR and information governance standards.
* Communicate effectively with team members, patients and carers, recognising alternative communication methods when needed.
* Adhere to safeguarding policies and promote the welfare of children and vulnerable adults.
* Follow health and safety policies, reporting hazards and maintaining clean work areas.


About Us

We have 22 practices across 4 PCNs (Blackburn North, East, West and Darwen) serving a population of approximately 180,000. Our PCNs and practice teams have a positive and supportive working relationship, and this role offers the opportunity to enhance PCN services further and fulfil our DES responsibilities.


Person Specification


Essential

* UK driver’s licence.
* Observance of strict confidentiality.
* Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
* Ability to listen and empathise.
* Ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team.
* Competent time management and organisational skills.
* Adaptable, forward‑looking with problem‑solving and solutions‑focused approach.
* A demonstrable commitment to professional development.
* Computer literate.


Desirable

* Experience of working in a GP practice using EMIS.
* General understanding of the primary care contract.


Qualifications

* Qualified GP with full GMC registration licence to practice, on a performers list.
* Newly qualified GP (less than 2 years from qualification).
