We are seeking an Electric Fleet Support Engineer to join our team at our Head Office in Birmingham on a full-time, permanent basis. In this role, you will support the engineering activities of the WM Trains EMU fleets, ensuring they meet all relevant standards while driving improvements in safety, reliability, and overall fleet condition—ultimately helping to reduce operational costs. You will play a key part in enhancing fleet performance by working closely with OEMs, ROSCOs, and component suppliers. This position is central to aligning technical, operational, and contractual requirements to maximise fleet safety, reliability, and availability. Key responsibilities include conducting In-Process and Final Work Inspections to ensure full compliance with engineering processes. You will also collaborate with the wider technical teams to develop fault‑finding guides, implement modifications, and deliver reliability improvement campaigns. Key Responsibilities Provide engineering and technical support for designated WM Trains -operated fleets, ensuring safe, reliable, and compliant operation. Delay Attribution and Reliability - Provide post fault finding reports/information that can be used to support delay attribution as well as contributing to the improvement of reliability and performance of the fleets. This includes working with fleet maintainers to collect incident reports and to manage day to day delay attribution of the fleets as directed. Unit Fault Analysis – Support analysis of maintenance data to verify that arising faults have been resolved satisfactorily. Oversee the control, tracking, and lifecycle management of calibrated instruments, ensuring all assets are logged, monitored, and submitted for calibration in accordance with technical specifications and regulatory requirements to prevent operational downtime. Conduct in‑process inspections, quality checks and compliance audits in accordance with engineering standards and maintenance procedures. VMS Review – Ensure that VMS is up to standard, and any change requests are suitable and appropriate. Support the development of fleet modifications to support performance/reliability improvement work streams, this will include applying modifications where necessary. Support the production function in developing EMU fault finding guides, that can be utilised by all Technicians/Outstation Technicians. Carry out audits and in process inspections to ensure compliance with the Engineering Standards Manual and maintenance procedures. Assist in the management of the interface between Engineering, Reliability and Production to clearly define roles and responsibilities and coordinate activities to ensure the most efficient delivery of required outputs. Manage effective communication of all relevant engineering and technical issues, including documentation, to the BAU fleet team. To ensure a robust communication of any technical change that may affect WM Trains processes and systems. Skills, Knowledge & Expertise Have served an apprenticeship or equivalent, supported with appropriate technical studies, to a minimum of HNC level. Excellent knowledge of railway operating and safety standards, rules and instructions. Excellent knowledge and understanding of a variety of traction and rolling stock and the standards applicable to them. Good knowledge and understanding of Health, Safety and Environmental legislation. Have experience in a maintenance environment with a proven technical track record. Good knowledge of Continuous Improvement processes and techniques. Good communication skills are required, including both verbal and written. Good knowledge of root cause analysis technique and its application. Understanding of key rolling stock commercial arrangements (manufacturing, maintenance and leasing contracts and suppliers). Excellent interpersonal skills with the confidence to influence all internal stakeholders, external bodies and suppliers.
