Overview

Hydrologist - Senior/Principal (WINEP and Water Resources)

We are seeking an experienced and enthusiastic Senior or Principal Hydrologist to join our Sustainable Water Management team. This is an exciting opportunity to lead and contribute to high-profile Water Industry Natural Environment Programme (WINEP) and Water Resources Management Plan (WRMP) projects across the UK.

WSP is embarking on a significant programme of AMP8 WINEP projects for multiple high-profile UK water companies. The projects are geographically and environmentally diverse. We will also be supporting water companies with developing hydrology for their WRMPs.

Your team Our Catchment Science team covers water resources and water security, hydrology and hydraulics, water quality, hydroecology and hydrogeology. We provide high-quality technical services and advice to government departments, the water industry and other sectors including power, transport, nuclear, mining, commercial and oil & gas.

Over AMP7 we saw growing demand across the UK Water Company Sector and Regulators; this demand is increasing as AMP8 begins, partly due to WSP’s role in Environmental Destination investigations.

Responsibilities

* A track record of contributing to the hydrological and water management elements of WINEP investigations and WRMP inputs in recent AMP cycles.
* Experience in developing rainfall–runoff models with a solid understanding of model calibration techniques.
* A solid understanding of broader hydrology approaches for water resources applications in England and Wales.
* Familiarity with demand management and water resources modelling approaches.
* Understanding of UK water resources management regulations including the Water Resources Planning Guidelines and WINEP guidance (e.g., Preventing Deterioration and Environmental Destination).
* Understanding approaches to assessing climate change resilience.
* Attention to detail and commitment to quality assurance in producing high-quality client and regulator-facing deliverables.
* Programming experience would be advantageous (e.g., Python and/or R) and an interest in developing these skills.
* Excellent communication skills and ability to write high-quality concise reports.
* Ability to work collaboratively with other sectors/disciplines to deliver hydrological aspects across a range of projects.

Qualifications

* A water-focused MSc (e.g., hydrology & water resources, sustainable water management) and a BSc in a related subject (e.g., physical geography, earth sciences, geology, civil engineering).
* You will have gained, or be working towards chartership with a relevant professional body.

Imagine a better future for you and a better future for us all. Join our close-knit community of talented individuals who share your passion for making a positive impact. Our global team includes more than 69,000 employees, working together to make a difference in communities both close to home and around the world.

What’s in it for you?

* Work-life balance with hybrid working policy: work from home two days a week and collaborate in UK offices.
* Inclusivity and belonging: a culture that values diverse backgrounds and authentic contributions.
* Health & wellbeing: Thrive programme, Virtual GP service, reasonable workplace adjustments, gym membership support, and menopause support.
* Flex your time: options like WSP My Hour, part-time and flexible working, extra leave purchases, and bank holiday entitlement adjustments.
* Your development: training, mentoring, and Chartership opportunities.

Equality statement We positively encourage applications from suitably qualified candidates regardless of sex, race, disability, age, sexual orientation, gender identity, religion or belief, marital status, pregnancy or maternity/paternity. As a Disability Confident employer, we will interview all disabled applicants who meet the essential criteria and will arrange workplace adjustments if needed.
