Purpose & Scope of the Role
Join Tetra Tech and apply advanced utility‑mapping expertise to projects that protect infrastructure and improve community resilience. Lead technical teams using GPR, electromagnetic detection and modern survey workflows to deliver reliable, safety‑first results across diverse sectors and geographies.
You will plan, lead and deliver utility surveying programmes across a range of environments, applying PAS 128 M1–M4(P) methodologies and producing standard utility deliverables. The role combines hands‑on field leadership with data capture (GPR, EM, total station, GNSS), processing and CAD output. You will ensure safe systems of work, accurate interpretation of survey data and compliance with client specifications and regulatory requirements.
Your Impact in this position
As a Utility Survey Team Lead you will raise site safety and technical standards, support rapid, accurate decision‑making for design and construction teams, and mentor colleagues to build capability. Your work will reduce project risk, prevent service strikes and support efficient delivery for clients across infrastructure, energy and environmental sectors — including occasional international assignments.
Core Capabilities
* Technical Utility Mapping — Expert use of electromagnetic detection and ground‑penetrating radar to detect, verify and map buried services to PAS 128 standards.
* Field Survey Execution — Lead and deliver surveys in diverse conditions, manage night works and overnight stays, and maintain rigorous site safety and method statements.
* Data Capture & Modelling — Proficient capture with total stations and GNSS; process, interpret and present utility data into clear AutoCAD deliverables.
* Team Leadership & Client Communication — Lead utility teams, allocate resources, liaise with clients and communicate findings effectively to multidisciplinary stakeholders.
* Quality Assurance & Compliance — Implement QA/QC protocols, ensure outputs meet contractual, regulatory and security clearance requirements.
Training, Qualifications & Experience
Proven utility surveying experience; strong knowledge of PAS 128 M1–M4(P). Competent with GPR, EM, total station, GNSS and AutoCAD. Full driving licence and suitability for security clearance required. QCF Utility Mapping Level 3/5, topographic surveying experience and relevant professional training desirable.
Working Environment
Base locations: Leeds, Manchester or Birmingham (flexible). Hybrid working available; expect a mix of office, client site and field days with typical office attendance 1–3 days/week depending on project. Travel, occasional night work and overnight stays may be required, including opportunities for short‑term international deployments.
