The role
As a Managing Quantity Surveyor, you’ll take a senior role in steering the commercial success of large‑scale, complex construction and infrastructure programmes that are central to the UK’s defence capability. Working in a highly regulated environment, you’ll influence billion‑pound portfolios, protect commercial outcomes, and ensure governance, contract compliance and risk management are carried out with precision.
Day-to-day, you’ll develop your expertise across major civils projects, work alongside specialist engineering and project management teams, and grow your career at the forefront of defence, aerospace and engineering, sectors that are meaningful, innovative and vital to national security.
1. Provide commercial leadership and governance across tenders, contract reviews, change control and risk management.
2. Prepare and validate cost estimates, budgets, forecasts, cashflows and value‑of‑work‑done for multiple project work packages.
3. Lead subcontract tendering, bid evaluation, negotiation and contract award activities.
4. Negotiate NEC4 terms confidently to secure strong commercial outcomes and manage contract scope.
5. Support, mentor and develop Senior Quantity Surveyors, Quantity Surveyors and junior commercial team members.
This role is full time, 35 hours per week and provides hybrid working arrangements with a minimum of 2 days in the office/onsite.
Essential experience of the Managing Quantity Surveyor
6. Experience managing large, complex construction contracts and bids in regulated environments.
7. Proven experience delivering major civils packages across full project lifecycles.
8. Strong negotiation skills with the ability to influence internal and external stakeholders.
9. In‑depth knowledge of NEC4 ECC, PSC and ECSC (Options A–E).
10. Robust commercial and contractual risk management expertise.
Qualifications for the Managing Quantity Surveyor
11. Degree‑level qualification in Quantity Surveying, Business, Law, Mechanical/Electrical Engineering, Construction Management or equivalent experience.
12. Professional qualifications such as MRICS, World Commerce & Contracting (WCC) or MCIPS - Highly desirable.
