Job summary
An opportunity has arisen for the post of ED Matron. We are looking for an enthusiastic, motivated and committed senior ED nurse for this post.
The Matron will be an accessible expert responsible for delivering and maintaining high-quality care, as well as implementing new ways of working in collaboration with the wider MDT.
The post holder will work closely with the Senior Matron and HON, leading and managing the nursing workforce within ED and playing a key role in the daily and strategic management of the department.
The Matron should demonstrate clinical expertise in patient care, excellent assessment skills, sound management knowledge, and the ability to provide strong leadership while maintaining good interpersonal relationships.

Main duties of the job

The department includes a fully integrated Urgent Care Centre (UCC), seeing over 120,000 patients annually with diverse clinical needs. Clinical areas include Triage, Major Treatment, Resuscitation, and an 11-bed Acute Assessment Unit (AAU).

Job responsibilities
To manage the quality of nursing care by:
* Holding Departmental Sister/Charge Nurse accountable for KPIs on the Perfect Lives database.
* Ensuring effective action is taken where nursing performance is at risk, in conjunction with the Directorate's Workforce Manager.
* Implementing Trust-wide nursing and midwifery priorities locally.
To address staff discipline, grievances, poor performance, and sickness, up to but not including dismissal.
Risk & clinical governance
* Ensure safe and clean environments, including equipment decontamination.
* Lead infection prevention and control initiatives.
* Manage complaints and adverse incidents, including serious untoward incidents, liaising with PALS to diffuse complaints.
* Perform root cause analysis and develop action plans for practice improvement.
* Ensure risk assessments and patient safety strategies are in place and effective.
* Share best practices and promote improvements via the Matrons Forum.
Professional leadership and staff management
* Be a visible, accessible leader for patients, visitors, and staff.
* Provide clinical leadership within wards.
* Develop nursing and midwifery contributions to service excellence.
* Develop departmental leadership skills among staff.
* Ensure policy compliance and represent the Trust at forums.
R&D, education, and training
* Identify training needs and support program development.
* Develop personal skills and contribute to staff development.
* Advise on R&D projects.
* Monitor and regulate training and development, including appraisals, mandatory training, and student placements.
Professional standards and patient experience
* Promote high standards in all wards/departments.
* Advocate for patients and monitor care quality.
* Implement patient feedback systems and privacy initiatives.
* Collaborate to maintain NHSLA standards and develop service quality.
The Matron will ensure equipment competence, staff training, and compliance with health and safety policies. They will participate in strategic service development and work closely with clinical leads and managers to meet organizational targets. The role involves representing the Trust externally and contributing to service modernization and partnership working.
