Head of Fleet Maintenance
£90-95k per annum
The Head of Fleet Maintenance is a senior, safety-critical leadership role within Engineering and Infrastructure, accountable for the delivery of safe, reliable and high-performing rolling stock across the network.
Reporting to the Fleet Director and leading fleet maintenance operations across Train Maintenance Centres, stabling locations and outstations, the role ensures that fleet availability, presentation and technical performance directly support customer service, timetable delivery and business performance.
At its core, this is a people-led, systems-driven leadership role, bringing together engineering excellence, operational delivery and cultural leadership at scale.
Key Accountabilities
* Lead and embed a safety-first culture, ensuring compliance with all regulatory and company safety requirements.
* Deliver sustained improvements in fleet reliability, availability and performance.
* Oversee end-to-end fleet maintenance delivery across all depots and stabling locations.
* Lead, inspire and develop a large, multidisciplinary workforce across multiple locations.
* Drive innovation through digital and data-led maintenance strategies.
* Act as senior interface with internal and external stakeholders, suppliers and regulators.
* Deliver fleet services within agreed Opex and Capex budgets.
* Lead fleet operations through industry and organisational change.
* Ensure fleet quality enhances the customer experience.
* Lead sustainability and environmental improvement initiatives.
Essential Experience and Capability
* Degree-level qualification in engineering, technical or business discipline.
* Proven senior leadership experience in a safety-critical environment.
* Strong strategic, financial and commercial acumen.
* Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
* Track record of developing high-performing teams.
Desirable Experience
* Technical knowledge of traction and rolling stock.
* Experience of train maintenance depots or comparable environments.
* Understanding of the UK rail industry.
* Experience within a Train Operating Company or rail infrastructure organisation.
