Data Quality and Insights Analyst - South West of England
Join to apply for the Data Quality and Insights Analyst - South West of England role at National Energy System Operator.
About The Role
National Energy System Operator (NESO) recognises the potential of talented individuals and encourages you to join us as Great Britain’s energy system undergoes an ambitious, exciting, and vital transformation. Together with industry, we are creating a cleaner, more sustainable energy future.
The UK has committed to reaching net zero by 2050, and the energy industry is transforming to meet that goal. NESO has been given a new and exciting responsibility: acting as the Regional Energy Strategic Planner (RESP) for Great Britain. RESP will coordinate the development of the distribution energy system, enabling confident, long‑term investment that supports a whole‑system, place‑based approach to decarbonisation.
As an RESP Data Quality and Insights Analyst for South West you will work directly with local data providers to support the collection, assessment, and validation of data that underpins regional energy planning. Your work will ensure that data is credible, transparent, and aligned with national net zero ambitions. A lived experience of South West is essential.
This unique opportunity combines technical expertise with stakeholder engagement to deliver real‑world impact. The role begins as home‑based but will transition to the South West office upon opening in the future. We are open to full‑time and part‑time applicants, as well as flexible working arrangements.
Key Accountabilities
* Collaborate with local data providers (e.g., local authorities, DNOs, GDNs, community energy groups) to identify, collect, and document datasets relevant to regional energy planning.
* Evaluate datasets using structured criteria such as source, reputation, recency, completeness, and granularity; support data providers in improving data quality to meet RESP standards.
* Capture and maintain metadata including data lineage, sharing agreements, commercial sensitivity, and transformation history.
* Facilitate review and challenge processes with stakeholders to validate data and resolve discrepancies.
* Ensure data meets transparency and documentation standards required for onboarding into the RESP process.
* Assist in identifying spatial granularity, validating and correcting geometry errors, and geocoding needs to ensure data is usable in a regional planning context.
* Support stakeholders—particularly those using spatial or visual data platforms—in interpreting and applying RESP outputs. Help them extract value from multi‑layered data visualisations, overlays, and contextual insights to inform strategic net zero planning.
* Guide data through the RESP quality gates, from initial discovery to acceptance by the Digital, Data & Technology (DD&T) team.
About You
We’re looking for individuals who combine strong data skills with a collaborative, place‑based mindset. You should be comfortable working independently in a regional setting while contributing to a national mission.
* Experience working with large, complex datasets and applying data management best practices.
* Understanding of the UK data landscape (e.g., OS, ONS, OGL).
* Familiarity with the application of value frameworks and the production of metadata within a data transformation pipeline.
* Experience using Python and SQL based frameworks for verification, transformation and consolidation of relational and spatial data.
* Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
* Proven ability to lead or contribute to complex, multi‑stakeholder projects.
* Proficiency in data visualisation approaches and techniques (including geospatial outputs).
* Lived experience of South West is essential.
