Role Purpose
The Publishing Manager is responsible for maximising royalty income and ensuring the accuracy, transparency, and timeliness of all royalty and income‑related reporting for the Group of Companies. This role goes beyond administration — it is a commercial and analytical position focused on identifying missing revenue, optimising collections, leveraging data for actionable insight to inform commercial strategy, and strengthening relationships with collection societies, sub‑publishers, and partners worldwide.
Key Responsibilities
Income Tracking & Revenue Optimisation
* Monitor global royalty flows and proactively identify missing, underreported, or delayed income.
* Investigate and resolve income discrepancies, coordinating with domestic and global societies, and sub‑publishers to ensure full income capture.
* Analyse revenue trends and highlight opportunities to improve collection efficiency or contract terms.
* Track and reconcile re‑licensed works and secondary exploitations to confirm correct reporting and payment.
* Implement processes and tools to enhance visibility of income streams and performance.
Data Analysis & Commercial Reporting
* Produce regular, clear, actionable royalty and income reports for internal teams (Sales & Licensing, Creative, Finance).
* Translate royalty data into commercial insights to support deal negotiations, territory planning, and repertoire strategy.
* Build dashboards and reports that highlight trends, growth opportunities, and risks.
* Work closely with leadership to provide data‑driven recommendations that support business objectives and inform commercial strategy.
Royalty Management
* Oversee end‑to‑end royalty processes – ingestion, calculation, validation, and reporting as per direct reports, making efficiencies wherever possible.
* Alongside the accountants, ensure timely and accurate delivery of statements to writers, partners, and internal stakeholders.
* Maintain integrity of royalty systems, metadata, and contractual setups.
* Collaborate with Accountants/Royalty Software Partners/IT to enhance system automation and efficiency.
* Keep abreast of Media Industry changes (e.g. PRS & MCPS rates); be an ambassador for the Group of Companies in this area.
Re‑licensing Management
* Support and oversee the re‑licensing process for works and rights across territories.
* Ensure relic deals are correctly documented, tracked, and reflected in royalty systems.
* Verify that re‑licensed uses generate appropriate reporting and payments through direct licensees or sub‑publishers.
* Provide insight and data to inform relicensing strategy and potential deal renewals.
Partner & Sub‑Publisher Relations
* Act as the main contact for sub‑publishers, ensuring strong communication, transparency, and accountability.
* Support and nurture global sub‑publishing relationships to ensure accurate reporting and optimal performance.
* Coordinate quarterly and annual reviews with partners to assess income performance by territory.
* Identify any new territories to drive income/Assist in onboarding and managing new sub‑publishing relationships.
Skills & Experience
* Proven experience (5+ years) in music publishing royalties, copyright, or income tracking.
* Strong commercial awareness and a data‑driven mindset, able to link numbers to actionable business outcomes.
* Advanced Excel and experience with royalty/accounting systems (e.g., Royalty Cloud, Curve, or similar).
* Excellent analytical and problem‑solving skills; adept at spotting patterns, anomalies, and opportunities.
* Understanding of publishing rights, collection societies, and global income flow.
* Strong communicator, able to convey complex royalty information clearly to non‑financial teams.
* Highly organised, with strong attention to detail and accountability for results.
* Knowledge of Music tracking software i.e. BMAT and Soundmouse.
* Pre‑existing relationships with collection societies, PRS in particular.
* Experience managing sub‑publishing networks or international royalty flows.
* Familiarity with BI tools (Power BI, Tableau, Looker).
* Experience in business partnering or revenue tracking within a music company.
