Purpose of the Role The Finance Director will provide high-level strategic financial leadership, working closely with the CEO, senior leadership team, and Board of Trustees. In addition to leading a small finance team through the Finance Manager, the role will focus on strengthening financial sustainability, improving financial insight and reporting, and enabling long-term decision-making that supports the charity’s mission. Key Responsibilities Strategic Finance Leadership Advise CEO and Trustees on long-term financial strategy, ensuring sustainability and resilience. Provide financial input into organisational strategy, business planning, and major projects. Support income diversification strategies, including fundraising, grants, and commercial opportunities. Financial Oversight & Governance Ensure robust financial management, controls, and risk frameworks are in place. Present clear and insightful financial reports to the CEO and Board of Trustees. Monitor cash flow, reserves, and investment performance against agreed policies. Insight & Decision Support Provide scenario planning, forecasting, and modelling to support decision-making. Challenge and support the Senior Leadership Team in delivering cost-effective services. Develop KPIs and dashboards for financial and operational performance. Stakeholder Engagement Act as a trusted advisor to CEO and Trustees. Liaise with auditors, bankers, and external partners as needed. Champion a culture of financial accountability across the organisation. Person Specification Essential Qualified accountant (ACA/ACCA/CIMA or equivalent). Proven experience at Finance Director or equivalent senior finance role (charity or SME sector). Strong understanding of charity finance, SORP, and governance. Track record of strategic financial leadership and supporting CEOs, Boards/Trustees. Excellent communication skills with ability to simplify financial concepts. Commercially astute, with experience in scenario planning and risk management. Desirable Experience in the health, social care, or hospice sector. Knowledge of charity fundraising models and income diversification. Experience in advising organisations through growth, transformation, or financial challenge. Commitment & Flexibility This is a part-time role, expected to require 4-8 days per month, with flexibility around working patterns. Additional time may be required at peak points (e.g. budget setting, audit, strategic reviews). Salary & Remuneration This is a fractional appointment offered on a day-rate or monthly retainer basis, depending on the successful candidate’s preference. We offer a competitive package commensurate with experience and the scope of engagement.
