Locum Consultant in Anasthesia WSI in Intensive Care Medicine

We are seeking an enthusiastic, innovative, and progressive individual.Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine and Anaesthesia to join our "Outstanding" CQC-rated Critical Care team. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to a highly recognised and forward-thinking specialty within the Trust. This is a 6-month fixed term post. The appointee will primarily work at the new Midland Metropolitan University Hospital (MMUH) but may provide services at other sites as needed.Applicants must be on the GMC Specialist Register or be eligible within six months of the interview date, with extensive training and experience in both critical care and anaesthesia. We welcome candidates with additional clinical or diagnostic skills that will enhance our team, such as accreditation in ultrasound.The job plan will incorporate a 50:50 split of daytime clinical activity between critical care and anaesthesia. The successful applicant will contribute to a dedicated consultant roster that covers both day and night shifts, with an on-call rota aiming for 1 in 16 soon.This job is a 6-month fixed term position.

Main duties of the job

The post supports the expansion of our critical care and anaesthetic services at the Midland Metropolitan University Hospital (MMUH), with potential cross-site responsibilities. We welcome applicants with additional clinical, educational, or leadership interests that will enrich our consultant team.Applicants must be on the GMC Specialist Register or eligible within six months of interview, with broad training and experience in both intensive care and anaesthesia. Our Critical Care service is rated "Outstanding" by the CQC, and our Anaesthesia Directorate is recognised for its strong training culture and multidisciplinary collaboration.The role is structured as a 50:50 split between intensive care and anaesthesia, with flexibility in job planning. The successful candidate will join the ICU on-call rota, aiming for a 1 in 16 frequency, and contribute to daytime cover across our 30-bed closed-unit ICU. Anaesthetic duties will include elective and emergency work across a broad range of specialities. You will also support the Enhanced Postoperative Care Unit adjacent to the ICU.

Person Specification


Qualifications

* Full GMC registration & licence to practice.
* Eligible to work in the UK
* MRCP
* FFICM
* Additional Post Graduate Qualifications
* Advanced Training in intensive care medicine
* Experience in critical care ultrasound


Teaching and Training experience:

* Ability to teach clinical skills to medical and nursing staff and other disciplines
* The ability to appraise junior doctors and other staff
* Formal training in teaching
* Defined educational roles or qualifications including representation for doctors in training
* Higher qualification in medical education
* Instructor qualification in adult life support via Resuscitation Council UK, or equivalent
* Instructor qualification in paediatric life support via Resuscitation Council UK, or equivalent
* Experience in Simulation Training
* Qualification in how health, illness, and healthcare are shaped by cultural, social, and political factors


Clinical Experience:

* CCT in Intensive Care Medicine
* Ability to take full and independent responsibility for the management of emergencies in Critical care and Anaesthesia.
* Ability to take full and independent responsibility for the care of patients
* Demonstrates a clear, logical approach to clinical problems and an appropriate level of clinical knowledge
* Able to prioritise clinical need
* Other experience relevant to needs of the department e.g., complex airway managementd specialist training in neuroscience intensive care
* Special interests that complement the existing consultants


Professional and Multi-disciplinary team working and communication:

* Ability to work well with colleagues and within a team
* Good spoken and written English language skills
* Communicates effectively with patients, relatives, colleagues, nurses, and allied health professionals
* Information technology skills
* Evidence of ability to work with multi-professional teams and to establish good professional relationships patient and colleague feedback

Management, Leadership and Administrative Experience:

* Ability to organise and prioritise workload effectively oAbility to plan strategically and to exercise sound
* Ability to motivate and develop the multi-disciplinary team, balancing departmental and personal objectives
* Evidence of longstanding engagement with the community in which acute healthcare is delivered eg via representatives of community groups and local charities
* Evidence of longstanding public health engagement with communities represented in the patient groups treated at SWB
* Experience and delivery at regional or national level of medical leadership and representation
* Defined leadership or quality improvement qualifications


Clinical Effectiveness

* Demonstrates clear understanding of quality improvement and clinical governance within the NHS
* Experience of conducting clinical audit or QIPs
* Ability to use the evidence base and clinical audit to support decision-making.
* Enthusiasm to embrace developments in ICM and parent specialty
* Evidence of innovative development and implementation of guidance
* Evidence of innovative development and implementation of guidance
* Experience in risk management


Research, Innovation and Service Improvement Experience:

* Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical problems
* An awareness of current specialty developments, initiatives, and issues
* Knowledge and experience of the application of information technology to anaesthetics
* Publications in relevant peer-reviewed journals in the last five years.
* Evidence of having undertaken original research
* Higher Degree e.g., MSc/MD/PhD
* Current Certificate of Good Clinical Practice (GCP) in Research
