Salary: NHS Agenda for Change - Band 5: £31,049 - £37,796 pro rata (subject to change from April 2026) 0.6 FTE, Part-time (21 hours), Permanent appointment; Based in Liverpool

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a dedicated Registered Biomedical Scientist to work within our UKAS Accredited Clinical Diagnostic Parasitology Laboratory (CPDL). The CPDL at LSTM offers a UKAS accredited local and nationwide diagnostic parasitology service for all specimens of human origin, adhering to ISO15189 standards and providing accurate, timely results to assist clinical diagnosis.


Key Responsibilities


Diagnostic Duties

* Perform serology assays, both in-house and commercial, for the detection of a wide range of parasite antibodies
* Prepare samples for microscopy, including concentration techniques
* Microscopy of blood for the detection of parasites
* Prioritise workload to ensure blood parasite diagnosis is performed in a timely manner in accordance with published turnaround times
* Microscopy of faecal samples for detection of parasites
* Microscopy of other bodily fluids, worms and insects for detection of parasites
* Apply molecular techniques for detection of parasite DNA
* Discuss findings with colleagues
* Generate results of assays within published turnaround times
* Communicate results to users in a professional manner
* Treat all clinical samples as potential biological hazards, working safely and adhering to health and safety regulations at all times
* Use laboratory chemicals and reagents safely in accordance with COSHH and risk assessments
* Adhere to archiving protocols and assist with archiving of samples
* Wash laboratory equipment and keep all areas clean and tidy
* Control clinical waste and use the autoclave
* Read and understand relevant documents such as SOPs, risk assessments and COSHH documents
* Perform all work in accordance with departmental SOPs
* Participate in departmental audits when required
* Participate in UKAS inspections
* Participate in EQA and inter‑laboratory comparison schemes with which the laboratory is enrolled
* Transcribe and verify documents and reports before issuance by a senior staff member
* Attend regular laboratory staff meetings and contribute to staff suggestions and continuous improvement
* Maintain stock levels and inform senior staff when items are at a reorder level
* Generate laboratory results for issue by a senior member of staff


Specimen Reception

* Manning specimen reception when required
* Adhere to local specimen reception policies


Administrative Duties

* Answer phone calls and give results to healthcare professionals when required
* Administer duties as required
* Communicate with all levels of the team, recognising when issues or enquiries need referral to a senior member of staff
* Adhere to the quality management system
* Adhere to ISO15189 by following procedures in place within the department
* Participate in staff annual performance, development and review procedures
* Be responsible for own professional development and CPD in accordance with HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist standards


Ideal Qualifications

* Qualified to degree level in Biomedical Science (or equivalent) recognised by the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS)
* HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist
* Experience in a clinical laboratory setting
* Post‑BMS registration experience in a pathology laboratory
* Experience in serology techniques such as ELISA
* Experience in diagnostic molecular techniques such as PCR
* Experience in recognition of parasites using microscopy techniques
* Knowledge of health and safety requirements for a clinical setting
