Job Description:
NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde is one of the largest healthcare systems in the UK, employing around 40,000 staff across clinical and non-clinical roles. We provide acute hospital, primary, community, and mental health services to over 1.15 million people, expanding to 2.2 million with regional and national services.
The role involves a 40-hour workweek plus 1:25 on-call duty with the North Psychiatry rota. Join our Older Adult Mental Health team at Cairnmhor Resource Centre, Dumbarton Joint Hospital, part of Greater Glasgow and Clyde.
This position offers opportunities in quality improvement, teaching, training, and research. It mainly involves 10 community-based sessions, with one session dedicated to acute hospital liaison at the Vale of Leven Hospital, a small district hospital without an A&E department. Liaison cover is shared among a liaison nurse, another consultant, and a specialty doctor.
Applicants are expected to participate in the North Glasgow rota on-call schedule (1:25), typically with a second higher trainee until around 3 am. The Community Mental Health Team (CMHT) is based at Dumbarton Joint Hospital, with inpatient admissions at the Vale of Leven Hospital. This role does not include RMO responsibilities for inpatients, which are managed by other consultants.
The successful candidate will provide clinical leadership for the CMHT and liaison services, diagnosing and managing severe and enduring mental health conditions in older adults, including some young-onset dementia patients, supported by colleagues and the wider multidisciplinary team.
This is a full-time position, but flexible or reduced hours applications are welcome. There may also be options for additional EPA, subject to service needs and job planning.
Applicants must have full GMC registration, a license to practice, and be eligible for the GMC Specialist Register. UK-trained applicants should demonstrate evidence of higher Specialist Training leading to CCT or eligibility for specialist registration (CESR), or be within six months of confirmed entry at the interview date. Non-UK applicants must provide equivalent training evidence.
