Our security team are key to the University's success. Generally being the first interaction our customers and visitors will have with us, the service they receive from you and the team will shape their experience. Security services, whilst delivering conventional security requirements, are a key part of delivering excellent student, staff and visitor experience. The team pride themselves on engagement and delivering services based on the needs of our university community.
As a Security Team Member at our picturesque Buxton Campus, you will play a vital role in creating a welcoming, secure, and supportive environment for our staff, students, and visitors. You’ll be a trusted point of contact; offering advice, guidance, and reassurance while ensuring the safety and protection of the campus community.
Your responsibilities will include responding to incidents, providing visible security presence, and assisting with access and safeguarding matters. You’ll also occasionally support our other University of Derby sites on an 'as and when required basis', contributing to a wider sense of safety across our locations.
This is more than a security role; it’s about being approachable, alert, and responsive, making sure everyone feels safe and supported while on campus.
The anticipated start date for this role is late August/early September 2025.

We're looking for someone who:
Holds GCSEs at grades A–C (or equivalent) in Maths and English
Has a security-related qualification or is willing to work towards one
Possesses a full, clean UK driving licence
Has experience delivering excellent customer service, ideally in a security or public-facing environment
Is capable of conducting minor investigations and producing clear, accurate written reports
Your ability to remain composed under pressure, communicate effectively, and show empathy will be essential to supporting our campus community.
* To be part of a high-profile Security Team, ensuring a 24hr point of contact and response service across all areas of the University; maintaining and promoting the safety and security of all University property, facilities and equipment, and that of all associated users and providing in-person emergency response across any location if required.
* To encourage and ensure as far as reasonably practicable, a safe secure and welcoming environment for all users of the University.
* Encourage all users to promote a secure environment through their own conduct, by providing advice, guidance and support for all security related matters.
* Identify, investigate and report all matters of concern regarding security, and deal with all incidents of crime and anti-social behaviour.
* Conduct investigations into all breaches of security and student discipline, providing comprehensive reports, assisting in enabling further action and identifying crime trends.
* Liaise and assist, where appropriate, with the Police and other external agencies in investigating all criminal activity affecting the University and its users.
* Undertake regular patrols of all University buildings and grounds, checking the security and safety of all property and contents.
* Provide a dedicated University key-holder service. Ensuring the timely locking and unlocking of all areas and buildings. Specifically ensuring that all doors and windows are secured, premises are vacated at appropriate times and all lights equipment and auxiliary heating is switched off after use.
* Ensure the effective operation of all Security related equipment including alarms, CCTV, access control and car park management systems, reporting any defects timely.
* Ensure a 24hr point of contact and response service across all areas of the University.
* Undertake vehicular access control duties and assist in monitoring and enforcing University parking regulations.
* In the absence of Estates Services Team Members, to provide adequate replacement cover, and to provide an emergency out of hours service as required.
* To drive University vehicles to assist in undertaking security duties and from time to time assist the Transport Department in other driving commitments.
* Maintain security databases, reports and events log.
* Act as a first Aider after appropriate training.
* Evaluate all requirements surrounding requests, or otherwise, to activate call out procedures for tradesmen, and contractors, and emergency plans amongst others.
* To be prepared to adjust working hours and arrangements were necessary.
* To undertake any other duties as seen appropriate by the Head of Security.
* GCSEs grade A – C in Maths and English or equivalent qualifications
* Security related qualification or the ability to work towards
* Full and Clean UK driving license
Experience
* Proven experience in a similar customer facing or Security orientated role
* Proven experience of working in a busy customer service environment
* Proven experience of providing excellent customer service
* Proven experience of conducting minor investigations and compiling written reports
Skills, knowledge & abilities
* Ability to handle incidents in a busy and often unpredictable environment.
* Ability to deal with conflict and difficult situations in a calm and effective manner
* Ability to offer exceptional customer service and engagement with students, staff and visitors across all University estates

* Completed enhanced DBS with barred check
