Specialty Director for Anaesthesia and Pain Services

Anaesthesia, Pre‑operative Assessment and Pain Services are central to the Trust's elective, emergency and critical care pathways, with a key role in patient safety, peri‑operative optimisation and system flow. This Specialty Director role provides senior clinical leadership across Gloucestershire, working closely with clinical leads to ensure safe, effective and sustainable services aligned to national standards and local needs.
Main duties of the job
Strategic, operational and professional leadership for Anaesthesia, Pre‑operative Assessment and Pain Services across the Trust.
Working as part of the service line Triumvirate, the post holder will:
* Lead the delivery of safe, high‑quality and financially sustainable services
* Drive service development aligned to Trust priorities and national standards
* Provide professional line management to medical staff within the specialty
* Champion quality improvement, workforce development and innovation
Job responsibilities
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership
* Lead the development and delivery of a clear strategic vision for Anaesthesia, Pre‑operative Assessment and Pain Services
* Contribute to Trust and Divisional strategy, business planning and transformation programmes
* Ensure services align with national policy and standards
* Represent the specialty at Trust, system and external forums as required
Operational Delivery
* Work with the General Manager and Matron to deliver agreed activity, quality and financial objectives
* Support the delivery of Cost Improvement Programmes while maintaining quality and safety
* Contribute to short and medium‑term workforce, capacity and service planning
Medical Workforce Leadership
* Line manage medical staff within the specialty, including job planning, appraisal and performance management
* Ensure job plans support service delivery, clinical quality and staff well‑being
* Work with the Chief of Service to address performance, conduct or capability concerns
Clinical Governance and Quality
* Provide senior clinical leadership for governance, quality and patient safety
* Ensure robust processes for audit, incident management, learning and improvement
* Lead and coordinate responses to external review, regulation and accreditation
* Promote a culture of openness, learning and continuous improvement
Working With and Through Others
* Provide visible, inclusive and compassionate leadership

Person Specification
Qualifications and Training
* Clinician of at least 6 months demonstrating successful clinical practice and good reputation.
Knowledge and Skills
* Leadership Management
* Evidence of leadership and/or people management (including persuasion, negotiation and conflict management)
* Service Improvement (must include improved quality/safety)
* Financial and budgetary awareness
* Strong understanding of clinical governance and quality improvement
Clinical/Experience
* External work roles – e.g., professional body or the Deanery
* Experience of service development and resource management
* Experience of system‑level or Integrated Care System working
* Formal leadership or management training
