Personal Assistant for a Child with Disabilities
Job description
Personal Assistant for a Child with Disabilities to be directly employed by family under a Direct Payment arrangement.
We are supporting a family to recruit a Personal Assistant to provide support for their child for 12 hours a week on a 1:1 basis, during school time and holidays.
Child’s profile:
I am 12 years old male and have severe epilepsy and allergies which can need emergency treatment - but training will be provided.
I do understand what you are telling me, but it is better if you give me time to process what you are asking of me and talk in a clear manner.
I need support with most of my personal and basic care needs, how much support I have is dependent on whether I have had a seizure or not.
I need to be always supervised as my seizures can come on quickly and without warnings or triggers.
I can be very unsteady on my feet so I will need you to be mindful of where we are going or when I am walking.
I enjoy doing jigsaw puzzles and reading my favourite books. I like it when you read these to me.
I like cutting out pictures of my favourite characters, blowing bubbles and watching wildlife programmes.
I also really like Julia Donaldson animations and movies.
I like socialising and being outdoors.
I can let you know what I would like to do and will let you know if I am not happy with something.
I can take a while to eat my food as I can struggle to swallow.
I need help with drinking water, carrying heavy items and my balance.
I also have a dog, who loves meeting new people and can be very excitable.
About you:
Desired:
1. You will have an understanding and a willingness to support me with my complex needs. Training will be provided regarding allergy and epilepsy care protocols.
2. I have severe food allergies so you will need to ensure that no harmful foods or drinks are consumed around me and that your hands and clothing are free from food allergens.
3. Applicants must be enthusiastic, caring and passionate about making a difference to children and young people’s lives, as well as wanting to build a relationship with the family.
Essential:
4. Applicants must have the right to work in the UK.
5. Full UK driving licence and have access to your own vehicle.
6. All applicants must undertake a new enhanced DBS check (even if they currently hold one) which will be funded and carried out by the Powys County Council DBS Team.
About the role:
The support will be for 12 hours a week to help my Mum and Family with my daily routines, giving me more opportunities to go out in the community, building my confidence and giving my Mum time to help prep meals for me.
We are looking for support Monday to Friday for an hour or two which could be midmorning (between 10:30am and 12:30am) or mid-afternoon (between 3:00pm and 5:00pm). This can be flexible and we are open to discussing.
This position will be under a direct payment arrangement, and your employer will be the family (you would not be employed by Powys County Council directly).
You will be employed directly by the family of the child(ren) you support. Powys County Council are not responsible for employment; we are solely acting as an advertiser for PAs.
If desired, please inform the IDS team if you would like to be contacted on behalf of other families looking for support in future. Your information will be held by the IDS Team unless you request us to remove it.
