The salary for this role is £56,596 (inclusive of a Specialist Allowance). Onsite working is expected for 3 days each week, with flexible working requests actively supported.
This position is based at Culham, Oxfordshire.
Applicants must complete an online Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS), including DBS checks and possibly a search of open source data.
The Role
We are seeking a Senior Materials Engineer within the Materials Division at UKAEA. The successful candidate will join the Non-metallics team, focusing on delivering non-metallic “fusion-grade” material technologies. Responsibilities include leading R&D projects on “irradiation shielding and irradiation damage effects in fusion and non-fusion materials”, publishing results, and representing UKAEA at conferences. The role involves sourcing funding and supervising team members.
Key Accountabilities
* Coordinate projects, manage equipment, scope, and resources.
* Deliver advanced nuclear materials characterization.
* Present findings in reports and at scientific forums.
* Lead and manage a team of scientists and engineers.
* Support recruitment and line management.
* Collaborate with external partners in academia and industry.
* Secure funding and contribute to strategic projects.
* Represent UKAEA at conferences and meetings.
Salary: £56,596 + excellent benefits including an outstanding pension.
Qualifications and Experience
* Degree or equivalent in materials science, physics, chemistry, or related.
* Expertise in non-metallics or irradiation campaigns.
* Experience in laboratory research, materials testing, or modeling.
* Understanding of nuclear environments and irradiation damage.
* Experience with analytical instruments or engineering models.
* Strong publication record and experience in grant applications.
