About the role
This is an excitingbrand-newtechnical role at Southern Water, perfect for someone who wants to get stuck in and help shape how we optimise andoperateour water supply network. As a Strategic Control Hydraulic Analyst,you’llplay a central part in improving system performance through advanced hydraulic modelling and strategic analysis.
You’llwork closely with Operations, Operational Control, Engineering & Construction (E&C), and Engineering Technical Services (ETS) to support the Safe Control of Operations (SCO) programme. This includes modellinghigh-riskoutages, forecasting storage, and helping develop strategies that balance customer service, systemresilienceand leakage performance.
You will also contribute to capital delivery projects andlong-termnetwork planning byprovidingspecialist hydraulic insight, mass balance modelling, and scenario simulations — giving you the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on how we manage and optimise our network.
What you willbe responsible for:
1. Supporting the programme management of annual outage plans andday-to-daySCO activities, balancing operational risk
2. Undertaking hydraulic modelling for planned Water Supply (WS) activities, including mass balance modelling, scenario simulation, and storage forecasting
3. Monitoring and analysing system performance, includinglow-pressureissues, DMA management, and water quality considerations
4. Developing and updating hydraulic models using tools such asInfoWorks, ArcGIS, and other network modelling platforms
5. Providing specialist technical input through the Risk & Value (R\&V) and Solution Development stages for capital projects
6. Supporting incident response through hydraulic modelling and simulation within the incident management framework (Network Risk Advisor)
7. Working with Operations and other stakeholders to develop and drive outage recovery strategies
8. Contributing technical insights to Continuous Improvement initiatives andbusiness wideoptimisation work
Additionalrequirements specific to the role
9. Collaboration with Operational Control Centre (OCC) production planners on forward outage planning (in week,in month, and up to a rolling year ahead)
10. Willinvolve occasional travel to sites and operational locations
11. Ability to work flexibly to support incidents whenrequired
Whatyou’llbring to the role:
Essential
12. Educated to degree level or equivalent experience in a relevant field
13. Expertisein hydraulic modelling software such asInfoWorks,Aquator, or similar
14. Strong knowledge of water abstraction, treatment, transmission, and distribution networks
15. Proficiencyin GIS tools (ArcGIS, MapInfo) and advanced Excel / Visual Basic
16. Skilled in data handling, interpretation, and presenting technical insights to stakeholders
17. Understanding of serviceability risk, water quality compliance, and the water regulatory framework
Desirable
18. Experience within the UK water industry or a related regulated utility
19. Knowledge of regulatory obligations and statutory requirements in the water sector
20. Experience collaborating on capital delivery or engineering projects
