Our Student Wellbeing & Success service provides holistic person-centred advice, guidance and interventions for students experiencing a range of needs relating to their psychological, social and financial wellbeing alongside interventions to support their engagement and success. The team take an integrated approach to student support, collaborating closely with academic and professional colleagues to ensure our students have the best chance of success.

The Mental Health Practitioner role is a dynamic and fast paced role which is central to our whole university approach to the wellbeing and safety of our student community. Working within our wellbeing and success service, the primary focus of the role will be on delivering triage, assessment and case management to students experiencing mental health related challenges. Our mental health practitioners lead on areas relating to management of risk, safeguarding, sexual violence and responding to critical incidents and offer advice, guidance and consultation to colleagues across the institution.

The role involves working within a multi-disciplinary duty team and the ability to work dynamically and respond proactively and confidently to a diverse range of presenting student needs is essential. Practitioners will also manage a case load of students delivering advice, guidance and intervention with the aim of supporting their academic engagement and success.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities of the Mental Health Practitioner post

As a Mental Health Practitioner, you'll be working in a dynamic and fast-paced environment, comprising a varying range of activity including mental health and safeguarding related risk assessment and management; the provision of one to one evidence-based interventions, utilising internal and external pathways of support and supporting the university in meeting its statutory obligations in relation to safeguarding and the Equality Act.

The post holder will work with a diverse range of students who may have a diagnosed mental health need, may be experiencing high levels of distress due to difficulties experienced during their studies or may be experiencing significant life events such as domestic or sexual violence. The role involves both proactive interventions and the ability to respond to need as it arises. Agility, organisation and the ability to prioritise and managing an ever-changing workload are therefore key attributes required to fulfil the role.

A core activity of the role is acting as a member of our wellbeing & success duty team. This involves working collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team to manage and respond to a range of incoming enquiries and concerns. The duty team acts as the first point of contact for colleagues or external parties referring into the service. The post holder will be able to work at pace and demonstrate familiarity and confidence in using a range of IT systems.

The post holder will work closely with their colleagues and leadership, contributing to the planning and implementation of solution focused interventions following established policy and practice. The post holder will work directly with students offering a range of short-term interventions and case management including assessments, risk assessment & safety planning, triage and context specific advice support and guidance. The post holder should be able to draw upon their experience of working in a one to one therapeutic or supportive setting with adults experiencing mental health needs to underpin this work and should have excellent communication skills.

The post holder will have the opportunity to support a wide range of activity across the institution including recruitment, staff training & development; strategic projects, policy and development. Team work and collaboration are at the heart of the service we offer, and the post holder will demonstrate the ability to work collaboratively with a diverse range of stakeholders.

The post holder will be expected to develop and maintain excellent working relationships with internal and external colleagues and stakeholders and should demonstrate understanding and/or experience of supporting students within a higher education setting.

As this is a specialist role a current professional qualification and/or registration in an appropriate field, for example social work or mental health nursing is required. The ability to demonstrate up to date knowledge and practice in terms of consent and confidentiality and defensible documentation is key.
