An opportunity has arisen for an EngineeringDesign Manager within Renishaw's Laser Calibration Products Division. As the Design Manager you’ll have technical oversight of all new product developments and be responsible for the mentorship of the engineering teams at all levels, to deliver market and production ready products.
You’ll have the chance to play a critical role in the delivery of Renishaw’s next generation of market leading laser & calibration systems, to drive future growth. You’ll provide leadership of focussed multi-disciplinary teams - who will work in close collaboration with project management, product management, NPI functions, software and production engineering teams.
You’ll be based at our New Mills site in Gloucestershire, with occasional international travel to support our subsidiaries in technical visits to customer sites (approximately twice per year)
About the role
1. Lead and mentor multi-disciplinary engineering teams and project technical leads to deliver market and production ready products aligned with Renishaw’s Group strategy
2. Ensure the technical resource is motivated and focussed on meeting project deliverables while treading the fine line between technical debt and time to delivery
3. Support and develop the most appropriate technologies, to meet customer needs and keep us ahead of the competition through innovative design and patent applications
4. Support making judgements and the clear communication of the technical direction of projects through the technical leads and Principal Engineers
5. Accountable for ensuring the production processes are fit for purpose while achieving the required product quality levels
6. Accountable for all technical aspects of product development documentation and design reviews
7. Develop individuals and working practices to enable delegated authority of outcomes and ownership within projects
About you
8. Qualified to degree-level in a relevant engineering, mathematics, or science discipline, or be able to demonstrate equivalent experience
9. Experienced in detailed design work and review with mechanical, optical and electronic design aspects - have practiced the concept of “thinking deeper to design simpler”
10. Experience of mentoring and leading design teams and product development projects in an engineering design environment
11. Understanding of both commercial and technical risk management, problem solving, root cause methodologies and be able to balance technical debt versus time-to-delivery
12. Understanding of processes for: product specification; verification and validation; execution of test activities; and reporting of results and conclusions
13. A full and valid passport is required for overseas travel where direct liaison with customers is required
14. An understanding of precision metrology and an appreciation of its use in the development of motion control systems.
Person specification
As the Engineering Design Manager, you’ll be able to demonstrate a practical approach to design, supported by your problem-solving skills and attention to detail. You’ll be capable of coaching and inspiring teams to resolve complex technical challenges to deliver not only functional, reliable and usable products, but ones that are convenient, desirable and meaningful to our customers. You’ll be self-motivated with a hands-on attitude to develop both products and processes and support their project technical leads in delivering multiple products concurrently. Your organisational and interpersonal skills will guide, motivate and develop the engineering teams and maintain collaboration across the wider division.
