North Lanarkshire Council is seeking to appoint an enthusiastic and self‑motivated Fair Trading Officer who can work both independently and as part of a team to ensure effective service delivery.
Based within Protective Services, this post operates on a hybrid working model, blending home and office‑based work, with a substantive base at: Station House, Old Edinburgh Road, Bellshill.
The successful candidate will play a key role in promoting a fair and safe trading environment by providing advice, guidance, and enforcement in relation to consumer protection and Trading Standards legislation. You will also support the Trading Standard team’s work on illicit goods, counterfeit products, and doorstep crime investigations.
Duties will include:
1. Inspecting premises and investigating complaints and service requests.
2. Advising businesses and consumers on compliance with relevant legislation.
3. Undertaking test purchases, targeted projects, and formal enforcement duties.
4. Preparing reports and presenting evidence for civil and criminal proceedings when required.
About You:
You will have experience of dealing with people, managing your own workload, and ideally experience within a Trading Standards or other regulatory environment. Knowledge of Consumer Protection, Consumer Rights, and general law is essential, along with strong investigative and report‑writing skills. IT literacy and familiarity with online resources are also required.
You will require to become a Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) Scheme member through Disclosure Scotland and obtain a satisfactory membership check prior to commencing in this role.
A full driving licence is essential.
This position is temporary for a period of 12 months.
