About the role
The Bartlett School of Architecture is seeking to appoint a part-time Lecturer (Teaching) position in Design for Bio-integrated Design March/MSc on a FTE
Jointly taught by The Bartlett School of Architecture and the Department of Biochemical Engineering, Bio-ID brings together an interdisciplinary community of academics, practitioners, and students. The course blends conceptual design thinking with laboratory-based experimentation, combining iterative design processes with emerging techniques in synthetic biology, material science, and computational modelling. Students engage with living matter as a design material, applying biological growth and biofabrication techniques to create innovative products, systems, and environments that address the needs of the built environment.
The program runs over a 21-month period through a 9-month overlap of cohorts in term 1/2/3, allowing a knowledge “batten pass” from 1 cohort to another.
Bio-ID is taught at UCL's Here East campus which offers students a unique, hands-on learning experience in a hub that’s focused on technology, design, and creative industries.
This role supports students as they incrementally reduce the uncertainty of early-stage design responses to the set briefs in Initial projects (that progress onto final comprehensive and integrative research projects). Tutors liaise with each other and BMADE to ensure that the research and practice trajectory and associated methodologies are of consistent quality required.
Tutors also ensure that the time, spatial, material and technology resources that the student research anticipates are realistic, deliverable and relevant.
This appointment is subject to UCL Terms and Conditions of Service for Academic Staff. Please visit About you
Working within a professional, diverse, and supportive team, the successful applicant will contribute to the delivery of high-quality interdisciplinary design tuition for both MSc and MArch Bio-ID cohorts. This will include setting design briefs for Year 1 and Year 2 projects, and working closely with students to shape their individual specialisation projects, which run in parallel with their integrated research projects.
In addition to studio-based teaching, you will support the development of programme resources, including Moodle content, briefs, and reference libraries, designed to enhance students’ contextual and theoretical understanding. The role also involves liaising with the wider academic tutor group to help shape a clear and consistent teaching strategy across the cohort, ensuring that project work is coherent, relevant, and aligned with programme resources.
This position requires a balance of teaching expertise, creative design thinking, and collaborative engagement. The successful candidate will be expected to inspire students, contribute to the evolution of the programme, and support the cultivation of an inclusive, rigorous, and innovative learning environment.
