Temporary Works Structural Engineer

About the Role
An established principal contractor working across large-scale construction and cladding remediation projects is seeking a Temporary Works Structural Engineer to provide specialist expertise in wind loading analysis, scaffold load assessment, and temporary works design verification.
This role is central to ensuring safe, compliant, and technically robust temporary structures across multiple projects. You will work closely with project teams, external stakeholders, and regulatory bodies to uphold the highest standards of safety, documentation, and design quality.
Key Responsibilities
Technical & Design
* Lead verification and approval of temporary works designs in accordance with BS 5975:2019, PAS 8812:2016, and relevant British Standards.
* Produce detailed wind loading calculations to Eurocode (BS EN #removed#) including building zone definitions and facade assessments.
* Review scaffold loads, hoarding designs, temporary access systems, and associated structural impacts on existing buildings.
* Assess load distribution, spreaders, base plates, and load paths for temporary installations.
* Prepare and review TG20:21 compliance sheets.
* Support on-site installation, inspection, and removal of temporary works when required.
Regulatory Compliance & Risk
* Prepare designer’s risk assessments in line with CDM 2015.
* Maintain accurate digital documentation to support the Golden Thread of Information and Building Safety Act requirements.
* Ensure all temporary works meet current regulations, British Standards, and safety guidance.
Stakeholder Management
* Liaise with clients, consultants, architects, and other internal departments.
* Participate in coordination meetings, site inspections, and cross-functional reviews.
* Mentor junior engineers and contribute to knowledge-sharing and continuous improvement initiatives.
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
* Timely delivery of temporary works design reviews.
* 100% compliance with relevant regulations and standards.
* Zero safety incidents related to approved designs.
* High technical accuracy and minimal redesign requirements.
* Ongoing professional development (minimum 35 hours CPD annually).
Person Specification
Essential Qualifications & Skills
* BEng/MEng in Civil or Structural Engineering.
* Minimum 5 years’ structural engineering experience, with 3+ years in temporary works.
* Strong knowledge of BS 5975, PAS 8812, CDM 2015, and Eurocode wind loading standards.
* Proficient with structural analysis software (e.g., STAAD.Pro, SAP2000, Robot).
* Experienced in wind loading for complex geometries, scaffold assessment, and load path analysis.
* Advanced AutoCAD user; familiarity with CDE platforms (Asite, SharePoint, etc.).
* Excellent communication, problem-solving, and attention to detail.
Desirable
* Chartered Engineer (CEng) with ICE or IStructE.
* Experience in cladding remediation or façade-related engineering.
* Revit/BIM experience.
* Temporary Works Coordinator certification.
