We are looking for a skilled and experienced Therapy Technical Instructor to join our Early Supported Discharge Orthopaedics (ESDO) team at the Royal Cornwall Hospitals Trust, supporting qualified Occupational Therapists and Physiotherapists.

This post is full time 37.5hrs and you will be required to take part in the weekend rota/ 7 day service rota in Trauma and Orthopaedics.

This is a fixed term contract covering maternity leave. The contract will end on 28.02.27


Main duties of the job

To assist in the development of Early Supported Discharge Orthopaedics (ESDO) team Therapy Services by supporting Therapists in the assessment and treatment of patients and the day-to‑day running of the therapy environment in ESDO.

To accept patients referred by a Therapist, and carry as own patient caseload. Treat patients according to set treatment protocols, monitoring patient progression, make alterations (within protocols and scope of practice) to patient treatment programmes as required.

Work unsupervised regularly, reporting back patient progress and informing the therapist of any problems.

For a defined and delegated group of patients – to undertake the assessment of patients, using investigative and analytical skills. To use clinical reasoning, and utilise a range of assessment and treatment skills and options to formulate treatment programmes.

Person Specification


Knowledge

* Good general education up to GCSE or equivalent. NVQ Level lll or BTEC national diploma in appropriate area or equivalent relevant qualification such as sports science / health related degree
* Comprehensive experience of working in an acute healthcare setting.
* Comprehensive experience of working as a Therapy technician/assistant. Experience of managing an independent caseload
* Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to communicate with patients with impaired communication abilities
* Ability to work on own initiative and to manage own caseload.
* Able to travel to other hospital sites and to undertake duties such as home visits/treatments as part of the main caseload. Access to a vehicle which can be used for the purpose of travelling between hospital sites and to treat patients within their own homes.
* Up to date mandatory training schedule Willing to undertake any necessary training and to participate in the training of others.
* Able to undertake the physical nature of the post including moving and handling patients and equipment, kneeling, sitting on heels, move inert adult limbs, support patients while walking, manual handling and transfer patients, push wheelchairs, use hoists
* Evidence of recent study, e.g. Anatomy and Physiology ITEC, Access to Occupational/ physiotherapy Therapy course etc.
* Experience of post-operative bracing, gait education and post‑op exercise programs
* Shows a commitment to working at RCHT Flexible 7 day working including managing the risks associated with unsupervised/lone working. A willingness to undertake twilight and weekend shifts.
* Previous Trauma and Orthopaedic specific experience as a Band 4
* Previous NHS experience / Band 4 experience


Knowledge

* Able to demonstrate empathy, motivate and persuade patients with impaired cognitive abilities or physical senses.
* NHS experience
