Healthcare Science Practitioner (Radiotherapy Physics)(XR05)
Applicationsare invited for an apprentice (level 6) Band 5 (Annex 21) Healthcare SciencePractitioner in Radiotherapy Physicsat the Leeds Cancer Centre, St Jamess University Hospital.
Theapprenticeship will start in September 2025 and will run over 3 years.
Onthe job training will be provided at Leeds Cancer Centre and with theeducational component for the Medical Physics Technology degree provided bythe University of West of England.
On completion of the 3 years successfulcandidates will be eligible to apply for the Register of ClinicalTechnologists.
Thesuccessful candidate will be trained in many aspects of the clinical service.

Main duties of the job
Thispost is based in treatment planning. The main responsibilities are:
To contribute to the day-to-daywork of the treatment planning section
To participate in quality controlprogramme on treatment machines.
To assist with the work of theMould Room Department
Tofulfil the role of Operator as required by the Ionising Radiations (MedicalExposures) Regulations 2017.

Job responsibilities
PRINCIPALDUTIES & AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY
Managerial
Prioritiseand manage own work.
Keepcareful records of all work performed on the patient databases and otherappropriate records.
Supportthe training of student radiographers and trainee physicists.
Clinicaland Scientific
Actas an Operator, under IR(ME)R, for specified areas of work.
Responsibilityfor the operation of linear accelerators, virtual simulators, treatmentplanning systems and other high capital value items of equipment.
TreatmentPlanning
Thedepartment produces over 5000 new treatment plans per year. Each plan isunique and specific to a particular patient. A significant proportion of timewill be spent interpreting patient treatment planning requests fromclinicians and giving advice to medical staff on appropriate planningtechniques. This includes producingand optimising 3D CT based treatment plans according to clinical protocols.
Ensuringall patient images required to produce treatment plans are available.Identify and contour critical organs at risk on CT or MRI scans followingclinical protocols and work instructions.
Producere-plans when required, following changes to the treatment regime or patientshape. Carry out manual dose calculations.
Participatein implementing and maintaining the Departments ISO9001:2015 Quality System.Participate in staff meetings to improve effectiveness and efficiency of theplanning service.
Accuratelyrecord all relevant information and ensure these records are maintained inaccordance with the requirements of the department procedures. Often these records will be maintained inelectronic format.
Communicatetechnical information to other disciplines across the field of radiotherapy.Develop and maintain effective working relationships with Trust staffincluding those involved with radiotherapy treatment and other relevantprofessional groups.
Supportthe work of the Mould Room as required.
DosimetryServices
Takepart in the routine weekly calibration of linear accelerators, ensuring thatthe doses delivered are within agreed limits.
Researchand Development
Tobe involved and contribute to any development work as required by the ChiefDosimetrist, including the support of clinical trials and techniquedevelopment.
Professional
Toattend suitable seminars, courses and meetings as part of personaldevelopment and to further the work of the department. Ensure all activitiesare carried out within a quality framework and meet regulatory requirements.
Person Specification
Qualifications
* A-Level BBC (112 UCAS points) with a B in a science subject or BTEC DMM BTEC (extended diploma) in a science/healthcare related subject (or equivalent)
* GCSE Grade C or 4 or equivalent Maths and English (with certification)
Experience
* Awareness of the principles of external beam radiotherapy.
* Awareness of the needs of patients and clients and the required standards for appearance and behaviour.
* Awareness of the operation of complex radiotherapy technology including linear accelerators.
