Job overview

Following the successful internal promotion of one of our valued team members, we are seeking an enthusiastic and highly motivated individual to join our cardiac cath labs leadership team on a fixed term secondment as a Band 7 Senior Sister / Senior Charge Nurse.

Our service comprises of six cardiac catheterisation labs operating Monday to Friday, 08:00–18:00. You will be joining a visible, supportive, and forward thinking leadership team, working closely with another Band 7 nurse and our Clinical Practice Educator to ensure an excellent experience for our patients, staff, and wider stakeholders.

As Senior Sister / Senior Charge Nurse, you will support the Cardiac Cath Labs and Day Ward Manager in providing strategic direction and professional leadership, contributing to the ongoing development of both the service and the workforce. You will be expected to undertake a broad range of clinical and administrative duties, working autonomously as well as under the direction of the Cardiac Cath Labs Manager.

You will act as a credible and visible role model across the Cardiac Cath Labs, Day Ward and Recovery areas, supporting registered and unregistered members of the team to deliver safe, effective and compassionate care. You will also be expected to uphold and embody Trust values, advocating for patients and promoting their involvement in the planning, delivery and evaluation of their care, while respecting their wishes, beliefs and dignity.

You will share leadership responsibilities with the existing Band 7 nurse, with each of you taking responsibility for an allocated team of nurses to guide, mentor and support. This structure will provide you with valuable hands on leadership and management experience. Opportunities to undertake a weekly off clinical administrative day will also be available.

Main duties of the job

1. To support the Cardiac Cath Labs Manager in providing strategic direction and professional leadership in relation to the ongoing management and development of staff and the service.
2. To ensure own practice demonstrates current clinical knowledge.
3. To act as credible, visible role model for the department and commit to working between the Cardiac Cath Labs, Day Ward and Cath Lab Recovery, supporting nurses in providing a safe and effective nursing practice.
4. To demonstrate specialist nursing skills and knowledge in the clinical setting and support the development of the nursing team using Trust approved assessment procedures.
5. To work collaboratively and strategically with the wider MDT ensuring compliance against performance measures.
6. To undertake the assessment of patients/clients with acute cardiology needs.
7. To develop, implement and evaluate programmes of care to meet the needs of patients cared for within the department.

Education/ qualifications

Essential criteria

8. Registered with NMC
9. Mentorship course / Assessor’s course
10. Evidence of continuing professional development
11. Degree in Nursing

Desirable criteria

12. PGC courses relevant to specialty
13. Staff management experience
14. NSSSA certification

Experience

Essential criteria

15. Cardiology/clinical experience in practice post registration
16. Evidence of positive involvement in leading teams in a cardiac cath lab environment, ie., coordinating experience
17. Experience of collaborative working with MDT

Desirable criteria

18. Rostering, Appraisal, Sickness and Performance Management
19. Cardiac Cath Labs/Day Ward experience in a Band 6/7 role

Skills/knowledge/ abilities

Essential criteria

20. Evidence of proficient cath lab skills i.e. sedation, scrubbing and circulating for procedures
21. Knowledge and skills in implementing change and promote this to the team; staff empowerment
