The job:
As our sole HGV & Plant Mechanic you will play a crucial role in ensuring our fleet operates smoothly and safely by performing repairs, maintenance, and inspections, ensuring compliance with DVSA regulations. Your expertise will help us maintain our reputation for quality and reliability.
We have 2 busy contracts based in the Midlands area, and our fleet is currently split between concrete mixer trucks and tractor units (80/20 split). Although mainly working independently in our head office premises the successful candidate will also cover our various plants and on occasion be available to troubleshoot ad hoc issues.
Duties include:
* Performing routine maintenance, inspections, repairs and servicing vehicles & machinery.
* Inspecting and conducting HGV/LGV pre-MOT checks to DVSA/VOSA standards.
* Attending to emergency breakdowns of company vehicles and carrying out necessary defect repairs (within normal working hours)
* Ordering spare parts and organising external servicing, inspection or repairs as necessary at the best possible terms.
* Completing documentation accurately and to the required standard.
* Collaborating with the management team to minimise vehicle downtime and enhance fleet management.
* Compliance with Health and Safety policies and procedures.
* Providing support and assistance to branch colleagues as required.
* Participating in Company stocktake when required.
* Attending health and safety meetings and other relevant training when required.
* Managing inventory of parts and materials to ensure timely availability for repairs.
* Exceptional housekeeping standards with an emphasis on cleanliness and tidiness.
* Conducting risk assessments before commencing work on vehicles or machinery.

The successful candidate will need to demonstrate the ability to work within a small team in a fast-paced merchant environment.
The ideal candidate:
* Functional Skills (Level 2) or Maths and English GCSE (Grade 9-4 or A*-C).
* An industry recognised qualification, either City & Guilds or NVQ Level 3 or Relevant HGV Mechanic qualification (BTEC, City & Guilds or IRTEC Qualified).
* Full UK Driving Licence.
* Valid counter-balance forklift truck certificate. (Desirable but not essential).
* HGV Class C+E Licence (Desirable but not essential).
* Valid Driver CPC Card & Digital Tachograph Card (Desirable but not essential).
* Valid vehicle mounted crane certificate for grab and hook (Desirable but not essential).
* Excellent communication and interpersonal skills whilst being approachable and friendly.
* Good IT skills with competence in using emails and learning new IT systems.
* Good local geographical knowledge.
* Punctual & excellent time management.
* High attention to detail.

Education:
* GCSE or equivalent to include Maths and English Language grade C or above.
Experience:
* Have previous HGV/Commercial mechanical experience (Not essential)
* Experience in truck repair and maintenance.
* Experience in performing 6-12 weekly PMIs and MOT prepping.
* Strong technical knowledge of hydraulic, pneumatic and electrical systems and experience of diagnosing and repairing them
