This role offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to pioneering research and innovative teaching in a collaborative and supportive environment. The successful candidate will engage in research that aligns with the priorities of the Bristol Digital Futures Institute (BDFI) and will be a key member of the Smart Internet Lab, contributing to interdisciplinary work shaping the future of digital infrastructure.

The position is open to those who are passionate about research, teaching, and industrial collaboration in the field of data centre networks. We are committed to fostering an inclusive academic community and actively encourage applications from people from groups under‑represented in engineering. Their research will complement existing work in the Smart Internet Lab and align with BDFI’s priorities in transformative digital technologies and systems. They will contribute to the teaching of electrical and electronic engineering, developing courses that engage and inspire students at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Supervision of student projects and mentoring of early‑career researchers will be a key part of the role.

Collaboration will be central to the post, with opportunities to work with academic and industry partners on impactful research. The appointee will be encouraged to take on influential roles over time and contribute to the strategic direction of the School.

You should apply if

The ideal candidate will have a PhD (or equivalent experience) in optical communications, electrical and electronic engineering, physics, or a related field. They will have a strong track record of research in optical fibre communication systems and data centre networks, with a clear vision for future contributions to the field.

A commitment to delivering high‑quality, student‑centred teaching is essential. The candidate should be capable of engaging students through innovative approaches and contributing to curriculum development. They should also be proactive in securing research funding and forming collaborations with industry and academic partners.

Equity, diversity, and inclusion are central to our values, and we particularly welcome applications from those who can contribute to a more diverse and inclusive academic community.
