Learning Support Mentor

Introduction/Background:

The team provides high quality support to students with a range of learning difficulties and disabilities, to include D/deaf students, those with Autistic Spectrum Disorders, Physical Access needs, Learning Disabilities, Visual Impairment and Language Impairment.

The primary purpose of this job role is to:

Support students with learning difficulties and disabilities to become empowered so that they can fully access the curriculum and successfully achieve their programme of study through their development of greater independence.

The primary duties, tasks and responsibilities of this job role are to;

1. Work in collaboration with the subject lecturing staff and assessors, under the direction of the Learning Support Manger, or their delegate, within a wide variety of learning environments and situations. Support students to access these curriculums both within and outside of a classroom environment including: reading out of materials, note taking, word processing, using enabling technologies, definition of language and other metacognitive skills.
2. Empower young people to achieve their personalised learning outcomes, including Education, Health and Care Plan outcomes and targets.
3. Adaptation of class resources in order to ensure students are able to access learning materials, i.e. enlarging text, modifying carrier language, etc.
4. Promote independence and empower students to make progress towards their achievement and champion learning support and inclusion.
5. Provide support outside the formal classroom setting e.g. at breaks, Lunch, and on pre-arranged trips where needed and the delivery of study programmes off the college campus.
6. Maintain records in accordance with the support guidelines relating to student attendance, target-setting and progression and ensure daily Pro-monitor records reflects the support provided.
7. Attend and contribute effectively to team meetings and focus on learning support improvements.
8. Support students with the delivery of therapy interventions e.g. Physiotherapy and Speech and Language Therapy following guidance and programmes set out by appropriate professional. 9. To work directly with young people to review their support needs, following the internal college processes.
9. At the invitation of the Learning Support Manager attend statutory annual reviews meetings with parents and/or external key workers of individual students as required.
10. Undertake appropriate training and development as agreed with the Learning Support Manager.

Qualifications:

11. General education
12. GCSE English and Maths or equivalent at grade C or 4

Related Experience:

13. Recent and demonstrable experience of supporting with people with special education needs.

Special Circumstances:

14. Prepared to represent the Department at welcome events throughout the academic year.
15. Prepared to undergo relevant training.
16. Prepared to work to programme needs across all college faculties.
17. Knowledge, Skills and abilities:
18. High level of sensitivity.
19. To operate with empathy.
20. Ability to motivate
21. Ability to work as a member of a team
22. Computer literate
23. Able to work independently using own initiative.
24. Ability to note take for students
