Building a sustainable tomorrow
We are now recruiting for two Senior Design Managers to join the HS2 Track infrastructure project at the initial design phase, which will run concurrently with the completion of main works contracts, currently at their peak. The team will mobilize as soon as civil works are complete and will operate under a collaborative Rail Systems Alliance structure to manage interfaces and resolve program conflicts. Members will collaborate on design, access, resources, and logistics to meet shared goals for cost and schedule.
Your role
Reporting to the Engineering Lead, you will work closely with the Design and Delivery Teams, Design partners, and Alliance members. Two roles are available: one to develop and lead the design for Calvert Infrastructure Maintenance Depot (IMD), and another to operate across all sections between Birmingham and London.

Your responsibilities
* Establish and promote best practices in health, safety, sustainability, cost, time, buildability, and quality.
* Manage the design process to ensure safety, efficiency, compliance, and timely delivery within budget.
* Leverage engineering expertise and modern construction methods to add value.
* Implement 3D design delivery strategies aligned with BIM requirements.
* Participate in engineering workshops and review technical proposals.
* Develop awareness of SHE hazards and demonstrate commitment to risk minimization.
* Manage and report on the design programme, obtain necessary documentation and approvals, and interface with stakeholders.
* Provide guidance, work closely with clients and teams, and identify opportunities for design improvements.
* Coordinate the design process, manage changes, and ensure effective communication.
* Lead design coordination meetings, produce minutes and reports, and oversee document control.
* Maintain professionalism with all project stakeholders.
Candidate profile
* Strong leadership and management skills, collaborative approach.
* Enthusiastic team player with decision-making confidence.
* Degree in civil engineering or equivalent; Chartered Engineer preferred.
* Experience in design and engineering management of buildings and rail depots.
* Knowledge of design standards, multidisciplinary coordination, and digital construction.
* Understanding of construction processes from concept to handover.
* Commercial acumen regarding contracts, procurement, and risk management.
* Excellent communication skills and problem-solving orientation.
