The role
The Financial Times is looking for an Acting Deputy Editor of House & Home – FT Weekend’s property and lifestyle section.
The successful candidate will need to have extensive experience as a senior editor on a newspaper or magazine, and be rooted in the core subjects of House & Home: international property, interior design, architecture and gardening.
This position covers a period of parental leave expected to last 12 months.
Key responsibilities
* Commission and edit global long form features, interviews and columns from a team of freelance writers
* Write features including property reports, interviews and trend pieces
* Close coordination with the picture editor, designer and graphics team on all aspects of story presentation across print, mobile and digital platforms
* Contribute to H&H Unlocked, the section’s weekly newsletter
* Collaborate with the team for the planning of the H&H stage at the FTW festival
* Introduce new writers as well as editing FT columnists and correspondents
We are looking for
The successful candidate will have a flair and energy for commissioning and editing features that look across the relevant news and lifestyle landscapes and join the dots to tell the story from an original perspective. The ability to juggle forward planning and news-reactive stories, and work quickly and decisively, is a must. Understanding the interests and tastes of the section’s global readership is key. The section combines in-depth reporting with trend pieces, personal stories and humorous featurettes – we are looking for someone who can shift gears between the style and tone of these features.
We require:
* Extensive experience commissioning and editing timely and imaginative stories
* Knowledge of mainstream and luxury international property markets, supported by a network of contacts
* An interest in architecture, sustainability, interiors and gardening
* Experience curating and chairing live panel events
* The ability to work collaboratively and with agility in a fast-paced environment
* Experience of newspaper production processes, and the ability to help steer and maintain systematic operations
