Job Summary
An opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic locum consultant anaesthetist to join the team at Yeovil District Hospital. The workload, by the nature of the hospital, is varied and requires comfort with anaesthetising for children, major colorectal, major orthopaedic and obstetric procedures. A background in peri‑operative medicine, human factors/simulation, day surgery or regional anaesthesia is particularly welcomed.
Responsibilities
* Provide high‑quality anaesthetic care for both elective and emergency surgical patients.
* Provide dedicated non‑residential on‑call cover (with internal cover).
* Be available within 30 minutes for emergencies requiring consultant input.
* Cover out‑of‑hours non‑resident calls including emergency theatre, maternity theatre and, if required, anaesthetising young children. ITU cover may be added in the future.
* Help develop evidence‑based local treatment policies.
* Take early responsibility for clinical leadership, quality improvement and educational roles.
* Work within the clinical governance framework and maintain professional competencies and development.
* Fulfil the duties, responsibilities and programmed activities set out in your Job Plan, as reviewed from time to time, except in emergencies or where otherwise agreed with your manager.
Qualifications and Experience
* Essential Qualifications
o Medical Degree and Royal College membership, or equivalent.
o Full GMC Registration with a licence to practice at the time of applying.
o Entry on the GMC Specialist Register in Anaesthesia via CCT (proposed CCT date within 6 months of interview) or CESR or European Community Rights.
* Desirable Qualifications
o Appropriate higher degree or qualification (MD, PhD or equivalent).
* Essential Experience
o Depth and breadth of clinical experience in Anaesthesia.
o Experience in a special interest that complements those in the department.
* Desirable Experience
o Experience at consultant / locum consultant level.
* Additional Criteria
o Competent to work without direct supervision where appropriate.
o Clear, logical thinking showing an analytical/scientific approach.
o Ability to lead and develop the service.
o Evidence of involvement in a research project in the last 2 years.
