Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced senior Occupational Therapist to join our Trauma Orthopaedic inpatient service at Aintree Hospital, managing patients’ needs from admission through rehabilitation and discharge across a 7‑day rota.

The successful candidate will provide senior support to the team led by the band 7 OT and physiotherapist. Applicants must possess excellent communication, organisational, supervisory and leadership skills.

The service provides specialist assessment and treatment of trauma orthopaedic in‑patients, ensuring high quality care across the pathways. Preference will be given to candidates with proven experience dealing with trauma orthopaedic patients, especially those with acute critical care, orthopaedics and home‑first and discharge assessment models.

You will support the MDT in delivering interventions that improve trauma orthopaedic patient outcomes, with strong patient‑centred values, an ability to drive forward positive change and a commitment to integrated MDT working.

Main duties of the job

* Provide a high standard Occupational Therapy service to patients with orthopaedic conditions.
* Be knowledgeable in the management of patients presenting with a wide range of orthopaedic conditions and provide educational/supervisory service to fellow physiotherapists, patients, relatives and other healthcare professionals.
* Complete specialist orthopaedic assessment and treatment of patients who may have complex and/or chronic presentation, determining clinical diagnosis and OT treatment.
* Work cohesively within a multidisciplinary team to ensure a holistic and coordinated approach to patient care.
* Manage own caseload and be responsible for junior members in supporting, prioritising and delegating caseload.
* Support in supervisory, teaching and education of team members and be a Clinical Educator for students on clinical placement.
* Contribute to operational management of the team and deputise for the team leaders in their absence, liaising with Therapy Managers.
* Utilise evidence‑based practice and support in management of orthopaedic service development and audits, providing recommendations for change.

Job Description

Clinical

1. To undertake Occupational Therapy (OT) assessment, clinically diagnose and implement agreed treatment plans, evaluating care delivery according to health care needs for routine and complex patients.
2. To advise, assist and educate junior OT and other members of the team / students in the management of routine patients.
3. To ensure effective communication with patients, carers and all other Health & Social Care Professionals regarding all aspects of patient care. This will include patients who may have difficulties in understanding or communicating.
4. To participate in Departmental Planned Out of Hours weekend Working.
5. Represent OT/Therapy team at Multidisciplinary Meetings to ensure the delivery of a coordinated Multidisciplinary Service.
6. Attend relevant ward rounds and clinics, working alongside the Multidisciplinary Team, assessing, advising and treating patients as required.
7. To carry out environmental and discharge to assess assessments.


Person specification


Qualifications

* Diploma / Degree in Occupational Therapy or equivalent
* HCPC Registration
* Member of Special Interest group


Experience

* Post‑registration experience in a junior rotational post providing a broad experience in musculoskeletal / medical surgical conditions
* Evidence of a contribution to clinical education of less‑experienced staff, students or assistants.
* Evidence of participation in audit
* Evidence of the advanced skills required to plan complex and rapid discharges


Knowledge

* Evidence of sound clinical knowledge and specialist skills relevant to the clinical caseload
* Broad knowledge of current best practice in Occupational Therapy
* Have an understanding of the legal responsibilities of the profession


Skills

* Ability to manage own workload, determine priorities and delegate tasks
* Effective written and oral communication skills
* Ability to keep accurate legible patient notes
* Teaching / Presentations at In – Service level
* Able to evaluate and be critical of self
* Competent IT Skills
