Overview
The Main Outpatient Department at Oldham Hospital holds clinics for many different specialities within several locations and we are recruiting an established Nursing Associate who is willing to undertake the British Orthopaedic Association Plaster Certificate to join the existing team.
The content of the course includes underpinning knowledge of anatomy and physiology, trauma and orthopaedics, as well as cast application techniques. The BCC will be awarded to students who satisfactorily complete the course. The assessments comprise a theoretical component (3000 words) and an Objective Structured Clinical Examination.
On completion of the course the successful candidate will be able to demonstrate skills and knowledge in a range of casting techniques including Fixed Rigidity Casts, with a wide range of casting skills using Plaster of Paris and synthetic materials.
Responsibilities
* To provide the highest possible standard of patient care in the application and removal of casts or braces.
* To apply appropriate casts following consultation or written instruction from members of the multi-disciplinary team involved in the patient’s care.
* To follow Trust policies and procedures in the application of all casts and braces, and to assist in the development and implementation of such, where required.
* To undertake clinical duties for which competence has been assessed and achieved, such as wound care and removal of sutures/clips.
* To maintain accurate and contemporaneous record keeping, and to uphold the confidentiality of all patient information.
* To provide advice to staff regarding the management of care for patients in casts.
* To provide instruction to patients and carers regarding plaster care and encourage patient/carer involvement.
* To contribute to the effective structure of clinics.
* To maintain a professional attitude in approach and appearance.
* To safely undertake procedures to meet the patient’s nursing needs, including routine procedures such as venepuncture, measuring and interpreting blood glucose levels, recording and interpreting vital signs, pressure area care, wound care, and skin integrity.
* To help bridge the gap between Health Care Assistants and Registered Nurses by working independently under the leadership of Registered Nurses, within the sphere of nursing and care and within all aspects of the nursing process.
