Overview
Job title: Consultant in Ophthalmology. Location: Queens Medical Centre, Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust (main base), with possible attendance at City Campus.
Responsibilities
* Clinical: manage a full range of ophthalmology emergency and elective patients admitted under care; provide a comprehensive elective and emergency ophthalmic service in conjunction with Consultant colleagues; provide reciprocal cover for periods of leave; maintain continuing responsibility for the care of patients in charge and for the proper functioning of the department. Duties are subject to review and may be altered by mutual agreement between the appointee, consultant colleagues and the Trust; the appointee is expected to devote substantially the whole of their time to the duties of the post and to give them priority.
* Governance and Audit: participate actively in clinical governance activities including clinical audit, incident reporting, review of complaints, risk management, Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and Evidence-Based Practice. Each directorate has a Consultant Clinical Governance lead.
* Teaching: contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate education. The Trust supports placements and training and provides a framework for medical education and CPD to enhance clinical and teaching skills.
* Research: leverage links with Nottingham University; access to University and Trust research facilities. Researchers must obtain approval from the Trust R&I Department and relevant ethical approval, and adhere to the National Framework for Research Governance.
* Other Duties as Agreed: may take on additional roles alongside clinical duties (e.g., Training Programme Director, Regional College Advisor, Royal College Representative). External roles must be discussed and agreed with the Head of Service before acceptance of the position.

Programmed Activities (PAs) – example: Direct Clinical Care: Emergency duties (predictable and unpredictable), operating sessions (including pre/post op), ward rounds, outpatient or other clinics, multi-disciplinary meetings, patient administration, e-Vetting. Travelling time between sites. Supporting Professional Activities: training (postgraduate), medical education (undergraduate), CPD, appraisal, job planning, audit, research, clinical management. Sub totals are provided within the full job plan; total PAs currently shown as 8.
The department is introducing extended weekday hours (7:00 am to 8:00 pm) including weekends as part of the regular timetable, and the successful candidate will be expected to support this. Out-patient clinic booking rules are being standardized; clinics typically run with a mix of face-to-face and virtual reviews. Basic clinic structure for subspecialties generally aims for 4 new patients and 8 follow-ups per 1 PA list for the consultant, with additional follow-ups for junior staff as agreed at the first formal job planning session.
Clinics and theatre sessions may require flexibility to meet service needs. If weekend work is required, time off in lieu will be given. Successful candidates are encouraged to take on Additional Programme Activities once settled, to be discussed at yearly job planning meetings.
