JOB TITLE: Assistant Design Manager

We are seeking an experienced Assistant Design Manager to join our team as we deliver a range of exciting projects across the East Midlands region. In this role, you will play a pivotal part in supporting the Design team by coordinating and managing the design process throughout each stage of the project lifecycle.
This is an excellent opportunity for an Assistant Design Manager to join a successful Tier One Contractor. You will receive full training, guidance, and ongoing professional development to support your long-term career progression. We are particularly interested in speaking with candidates who hold a relevant construction-related degree such as Architectural Technology. Strong organisational skills and the ability to communicate clearly across all levels of the business are essential.
Key Responsibilities
Expected duties for the Assistant Design Manager include:
Quality Control: Implement and maintain quality control procedures to ensure all design and construction work meets company standards and complies with ISO requirements.
Documentation: Maintain thorough and accurate project records, including design control documents, approvals, reports, and meeting minutes.
Problem Solving: Identify, address, and resolve design-related issues that may arise during the design and construction phases.
Compliance: Ensure all design outputs comply with building regulations, contractual obligations, and relevant industry standards.
Building Safety Act: Maintain an understanding of the changes brought by the Building Safety Act and support the implementation of processes required to demonstrate compliance across project gateways.
Coordinate Design Activities: Oversee and coordinate all design activities, ensuring alignment with project timelines and objectives.
Stakeholder Liaison: Act as a key point of contact between the design team, contractors, and clients, ensuring communication is clear, accurate, and timely. Provide design input into tender, construction, and variation/compensation event programmes where required.
Review & Approve Designs: Evaluate design proposals, drawings, and specifications to ensure they meet project requirements, and raise technical queries where necessary.
Person Specification
Essential:
• Degree or equivalent qualification in Architecture, Engineering, Construction Management, or relevant on-site experience.
• Proven experience in a design coordination or design management role within the construction sector.
• Strong understanding of design processes, building regulations, and construction methodologies.
• Proficiency in design and coordination tools such as AutoCAD, Revit, Navisworks, and Microsoft Office Suite.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Strong attention to detail when reviewing design documentation.
• Ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines within a fast-paced environment.
Desirable:
• Membership of a relevant professional body (e.g., RIBA, CIOB, ICE).
• Experience working within a BIM environment.
• Exposure to live construction projects and awareness of site constraints.
• Knowledge of sustainable design principles and environmental standards (e.g., BREEAM, LEED).
• Familiarity with JCT or NEC contracts and their impact on design deliverables.
