Specialist Biomedical Scientist

We are seeking an experienced HCPC-registered Specialist Biomedical Scientist to join the Clinical Biochemistry team at University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust (UHSussex).
This is a fully rotational post across Automation at the Royal Sussex County Hospital (RSCH) and Princess Royal Hospital (PRH), and Specialist Biochemistry at RSCH. The department is UKAS accredited and holds IBMS approval for Registration and Specialist Portfolio training.
The role involves performing a wide range of complex investigations using manual, semi-automated and automated techniques to support diagnosis and patient management. Participation in a 24/7 shift rota, including nights, weekends and bank holidays, is required.
Applications are welcomed from HCPC-registered Biomedical Scientists, including Band 5 staff nearing completion (≥75%) of their IBMS Specialist Portfolio.
Main duties of the job
* Analyse samples according to the departmental Standard Operating Procedures, including requesting tests and reporting results. Perform highly complex analyses and inform senior staff of any proposed changes to SOPs.
* Undertake and/or oversee planned preventative maintenance on complex, expensive, and specialised analysers to ensure correct functioning. Record problems and troubleshoot or refer to senior staff.
* Prioritise workload according to national guidelines and understand the clinical urgency of requests and the impact on patient care.
* Perform calibrations on all methods and inform senior staff of any issues.
* Perform and verify quality control samples (including checking quality control charts) to ensure accuracy and precision. Carry out corrective action to keep analyses within defined parameters and use statistical parameters for mean and SD.
* Perform external quality assurance analysis on specialised analysers.
* Participate in out-of-hours arrangements when assessed as competent to provide a 24/7 emergency and routine biochemistry service.
* Undertake analytical validation of results produced.
* Check all samples before processing for status & suitability.
* Interpret results and clinical history to ensure patients receive correct therapy.
Person Specification
* HCPC registered.
* Minimum of 2 years NHS laboratory experience in Clinical Biochemistry, including specialist biochemistry techniques.
* Experience in analysis of complex results and judgement of clinical relevance.
* Evidence of championing diversity and undertaking development to improve understanding of equalities issues.
* Disclosure and Barring Service background check, subject to Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975.
