As a Consultant Cardiologist at University Hospitals Plymouth, you will play a vital role in delivering top-quality cardiology services in a supportive and collaborative environment.
This position is designed to enhance the provision of secondary cardiology care, including outpatient services, to the local population in Devon and Cornwall. The job requires a basic 10 PA (Planned Activities) job plan, with potential for additional negotiations regarding specific sub-speciality interests in alignment with the strategic objectives of the Cardiology Service.
The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the Directorate's educational and audit program, including monthly CME/audit meetings and weekly teaching sessions for junior staff. University Hospital Plymouth's commitment to undergraduate teaching for both medical and dental students, including tertiary care modules in conjunction with Plymouth University, is evident in outstanding teaching facilities on-site.
Main duties of the job
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
Clinical Care:Diagnose and manage patients with acute and chronic cardiovascular conditions.Perform and interpret diagnostic tests such as echocardiograms, ECGs, and cardiac MRIs.Provide outpatient and inpatient care, including consultations and follow-up appointments.Lead and participate in ward rounds, ensuring comprehensive patient care.
Procedural Work:
Conduct interventional procedures such as angiography, angioplasty, and pacemaker implantation.Ensure all procedures are performed to the highest standards of safety and quality.
Multidisciplinary Collaboration:
Work closely with other healthcare professionals, including nurses, radiologists, and surgeons, to provide integrated care.
Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings to discuss patient cases and treatment plans.
Teaching and Training:
Provide education and training to junior doctors, medical students, and other healthcare staff.Participate in continuing professional development (CPD) and clinical governance initiatives.
Research and Development:
Engage in clinical research to advance the field of cardiology.Publish findings in peer-reviewed journals and present at conferences.
Management and Leadership:
Take on leadership roles within the department, contributing to service development and improvement.Participate in the management of the cardiology department, including rota planning and resource allocation.

Person specification
* MBBS or equivalent
* MRCP (UK) or equivalent
* To be on, or within 6 months of being on, the GMC Specialist Register in Cardiology via a CCT in Cardiology or equivalent e.g CESR, at the time of interview.
* Higher degree (MD, PhD or equivalent)
Clinical Experience & Skills
* Fully trained in general cardiology and coronary interventional procedures.
* Evidence of thorough and broad training and experience in the specialty.
* Comprehensive knowledge in the specialty and ability to offer expert clinical opinion on range of problems
* Demonstrates good knowledge of the structures and culture of the NHS, roles, responsibilities and relationships across the MDT and the multi-professional team
* Able to take full and independent responsibility for delivering service without direct supervision
Research & clinical audit
* Ability to undertake and direct audit and QIP with demonstrable understanding of the impact and challenges.
* Publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at national and international scientific meetings
* Knowledge of research ethics and grant applications.
* Experience of setting up collaborative multicentre research projects
Teaching
* Knowledge and experience of supervising undergraduates, junior doctors and other staff
* Ability to teach clinical skills
* A professional qualification in medical education
Communication & interpersonal skills
* Excellent verbal and written skills.
* Good IT skills, use of patient and hospital databases
* Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work within an MDT
