Overview

The post-holder will contribute to multidisciplinary complex assessment clinics and provide evidence-based direct and indirect intervention to children, young people and families with tics and other movement disorders, including medication monitoring. This is an interesting and varied role with scope to develop further specialist knowledge and skills within the context of the multi-disciplinary team. You will be working with a Consultant Neurologist, Consultant Neuropsychiatrist and Clinical Psychologists. Supervision will be provided by an experienced practitioner and there are good opportunities for professional development.

We are a dedicated and supportive team with a commitment to research, audit and evaluation and there are many active projects within the department.

* Independently manage a group of patients within the specialty whilst working as part of the multidisciplinary team, delivering specialised individualised and personalised direct patient care.
* Demonstrate appropriate practice and specialist advice in the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of patient care, including history taking, physical examination and the requesting of agreed diagnostic procedures/clinical investigations.
* Be responsible for the correct administration of prescribed medication including transfusion of blood and blood products.
* Be responsible for assessing and recognising emergencies in the specialty, interpreting information and taking appropriate action and leading others to do the same.
* Act as an advocate for patients within the department to ensure a patient-orientated approach to care and to meet standards within the NHS Plan and other relevant guidelines.
* Ensure that patients receive high quality clinical care and a good patient experience, respecting customs, religious beliefs and doctrines.
* Recognise and avoid situations that may be detrimental to the health and wellbeing of individuals.
* Provide leadership, support and guidance to staff in monitoring, planning, delivery and evaluation of individualised specialist care.
* Remain wholly accountable for practice in line with the NMC code of professional conduct and sustain/improve professional knowledge and competence.
* Ensure safe and effective care for complex patients requiring advanced specialist clinical skills and carry out specialist nursing procedures relevant to the area.
* Maintain a safe clinical environment for patients, visitors and staff; ensure sensitive patient records are stored appropriately.
* Recognise and accommodate the cultural and spiritual needs of patients within available resources.
* Support and enable patients and carers to make informed decisions regarding treatment and management.
* Participate in case conferences to coordinate ongoing care.
* Take precautions to minimise cross-infection in relation to the safe disposal of body fluids (including blood).
* Be a key member of the multidisciplinary team in supporting patients and carers during the delivery of bad news and in caring for terminally ill patients or in the event of death.
* Assess educational and information needs for patients and families and devise plans to meet those needs.
* Be an effective communicator with patients, carers and families regarding disease, treatment and management.
* Promote high quality clinical care and assist in the development of the specialist service through evidence-based practice and clinical standards.
* Provide a seamless, high quality service from referral through to assessment, diagnosis, treatment and review.

Role Context

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Paediatric Nurse to join our Neurosciences service for 9 months as a full-time Clinical Nurse Specialist working within the TANDeM Service at the Evelina London Children’s Hospital. The service provides a comprehensive diagnostic and management service for children affected by tics and neuro-developmental movements. Our clinic is part of the children's neurosciences centre at St Thomas' Hospital, the largest children's neurosciences service in Europe, with referrals from across the South East region and beyond.
