Lead with purpose. Shape the future of public services.

The Workforce Development Trust is a registered charity and the parent company of a group of organisations that support over 65% of public services, including health, justice, local government, fire and rescue, police, prisons, probation and the armed services. Our brands include “Skills for Health”, “Skills for Justice”, “People 1st”, “SFJ Awards” and “ICQ Awards”. We are committed to the development of improved and sustainable workforces in our sectors across the UK.

Trusted locally, and nationally we deliver sustainable, value-for-money solutions that improve skills, productivity, and quality across the public sector.

We are seeking an exceptional Non-Executive Chair to lead our Board of Trustees and work closely with our Chief Executive. This is a pivotal role at the heart of a values-driven organisation with a strong commercial ethos and no reliance on government funding.

We are looking for a seasoned Chair with a track record of board leadership and a strong commercial background, who understands the public sector landscape. With a recognised reputation for leadership excellence, you’ll have a deep understanding of the legal, political, and economic challenges facing our sectors, an awareness of the strategic implications of AI, and are skilled in navigating complex stakeholder environments with sensitivity and commercial acumen.

Critically, you will demonstrate a deep commitment to the Nolan Principles of Public Life—selflessness, integrity, objectivity, accountability, openness, honesty, and leadership—ensuring the highest standards of ethical governance and public trust.

You will guide the Trust through change, ensuring sustainability and impact, while championing innovation, performance, and accountability. Diversity and inclusion are central to our mission, and we welcome applications from candidates of all backgrounds.

Join us to help shape the future of public services.
