Job Description
We are seeking a highly skilled CAD designer and CNC operator to lead the digitisation and in‑house machining of both traditional and contemporary furniture frames. The role combines digital precision with a deep respect for handcrafted construction, supporting the development of our internal digital pattern library and CNC production workflows.
Working closely with our senior frame maker and design director, you will translate physical frame concepts into robust, production‑ready 3D CAD models and manufacture final components via 3 axis CNC routing. Using materials such as sheet plywood and selected hardwoods, you will apply a considered and creative engineering approach to the machining and construction of high‑quality frames.
Key Responsibilities:
* Develop and maintain accurate 3D CAD models of furniture frames (Autodesk Fusion)
* Digitise existing physical frame patterns (reverse engineering, parametric modelling)
* Create CAM toolpaths for CNC routing of solid wood and plywood components
* Operate and maintain in-house a 3-axis CNC router (Exel M1A)
* Integrate outsourced elements (e.g. turned legs or shaped arms) into the master assembly
* Collaborate with designer, frame maker and project manager to ensure manufacturing feasibility
* Maintain a structured digital design library with clear file versioning and documentation
* Support bespoke modification requests by adjusting CAD models dynamically
Requirements:
* 3+ years’ experience in product or furniture CAD design (preferably in timber or joinery-based products)
* Proficient in Autodesk Fusion Manufacturing (CAD + CAM workflows)
* Hands-on experience operating CNC routers in a workshop environment
* Understanding of wood materials, tolerances, and furniture joinery (mortise & tenon, dowel, slot joints, etc.)
* Ability to troubleshoot and self-direct in a small team environment
* Detail-oriented with a methodical approach to version control and documentation
Desirable:
* Experience with traditional furniture frame design or restoration
* Understanding of upholstery layering, foam patterns, and digital visualisation
* Familiarity with digital transformation tools (e.g. nesting software, ERP integrations)
* Experience with laser cutting and prototyping in plywood or similar
With access to modern equipment and a clean, well‑organised workshop environment, you will have the autonomy to develop and refine methods that raise technical standards, contribute meaningfully to our manufacturing philosophy, and support the production of British‑made furniture for an international high net worth audience.
