Lecturer in Lightning Protection
to join our dedicated training team at Bircham Newton.
Location:
National Construction College East, Bircham Newton, Norfolk (site-based) with occasional overnight stays throughout the UK
Hours of Work:
Full-time (35 hours per week)

Special Requirements:
The post holder will be eligible for either a company car or a car allowance in line with the grade for this role, subject to the vehicle nominated for business use complying with CITB's Car Policy.
About the Role
As a Lecturer, you will use your specialist knowledge of lightning protection to deliver high‑quality vocational training that meets industry standards and aligns with the Ofsted Education Inspection Framework (EIF). You'll support instructors, mentor assessors, and ensure learners develop the exact skills, behaviours, and technical understanding required in this niche but critical safety field.
This role is specifically for experts in lightning protection systems —
not general commercial electricians
. We're seeking someone with deep, practical knowledge of lightning protection installation, inspection, testing, and maintenance, who can bring real-world expertise into the classroom and workshop.
What You'll Be Doing as a Lecturer
* Lead and support vocational instructors and assessors through induction, probation, and ongoing development
* Conduct Learning Walks, Desk Top Evaluations, and quality reviews
* Deliver CPD sessions and Personal Development lessons
* Liaise with Awarding Bodies and End Point Assessment Organisations
* Plan and deliver engaging practical and theory lessons aligned with industry standards
* Create inclusive teaching resources and provide tailored learner support
* Monitor learner progress and contribute to review processes
* Promote career progression and provide guidance
* Uphold safeguarding, health & safety, and foster a positive learning environment
* Maintain strong industry relationships and stay current with sector developments
Specialist Lightning Protection Duties
* Install LPS components: air terminals, down conductors, earth electrodes, bonding
* Conduct LPS inspection, testing, fault‑finding, and maintenance
* Produce surveys, condition reports, and compliance documentation (BS EN 62305)
* Work safely at height on roofs, towers, scaffolds, and MEWPs
* Liaise with clients, provide technical advice, and ensure safe site conduct
Essential Qualifications
* Level 2 vocational qualification supplemented by specific Lightning Protection industry training (e.g Level 2 Diploma in Electrical Installation (Building and Structures) or Level 2 Award/Certificate in Electrical or Specialist Earthing Systems, where content includes LPS earthing principles
* Minimum Level 2 S/NVQ Qualification (e.g S/NVQ Level 2 or Level 3 – Lightning Conductor Engineer or S/NVQ Level 3 – Lightning Protective Systems Inspecting & Testing
* Hold a Level 2 qualification or higher in English and maths or demonstrate proficiency at Level 2 or above through a recognised assessment in both subjects
* Level 5 teaching qualification (or willingness to achieve within 2 years)
* Assessor Awards (or willingness to achieve within 1 year)
Essential Skills and Experience
* Relevant industry experience in construction
* Strong, proven industry experience in installing lightning protection systems
* Excellent knowledge of current industry practices
* Evidence of continuous professional development
* Strong verbal and written communication skills
* Excellent organisational skills
* Proficiency in Microsoft Office 365
Desirable
* Higher-level construction-related qualification
* Higher-level education-related qualification
* Experience in apprenticeship delivery
