Immunocytochemistry Laboratory and Referral Assistant

The Cellular Pathology laboratory at the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton is looking for an enthusiastic and self‑motivated individual to join our busy team.
The post holder will be based in the Immunocytochemistry section of the department and will be responsible for routine machine maintenance, reagent exchange, waste reagent disposal, data entry of specimen requests onto the laboratory information system, expediting urgent cases, collating and dispatching patient samples to the Genomic Hub, and providing administrative assistance with referral cases.
This is a full‑time position, Monday to Friday, 9 am to 5 pm.
Main duties of the job
* Responsible for routine machine maintenance and reagent exchange, including safe removal and disposal of waste reagents.
* Data entry of Immunocytochemistry requests into the LIMS, monitoring case progress to ensure urgent cases are expedited.
* Maintain traceability and sign‑out of completed cases.
* Collate and dispatch patient samples between the department and the Southeast Genomics Laboratory hub.
* Coordinate and document specimen transfer to other hospitals, external organisations, and specialist centres for second opinion, research, or external reporting.
* Provide administrative support including monitoring the mailbox and assisting with preparation, dispatch, and documentation of specimens.
* Create and use Excel spreadsheets to record information.
Eligibility for visa sponsorship
As a UK‑based role, the position is eligible for visa sponsorship under the UK Visas & Immigration (UKVI) Skilled Worker route. Sponsorship is provided only when applicants meet the specific UKVI requirements, including the relevant skill level and salary thresholds (£25,000).
Person Specification
Qualifications
* NVQ Level 3 or equivalent qualification.
* Good numeracy and English skills; ideally GCSE grade 3 or above.
Experience
* Previous laboratory experience.
* Robust IT skills, including data inputting, Microsoft Word and Excel.
* Experience working in a histology laboratory.
* Experience working in an NHS environment.
